We are trying to raise money for a dear friend and proud member of the LTBTQ+ community to help him get out of an extremely unfair and unfortunate situation. - MEET OUR FRIEND, TANNER -
Our friend, Tanner Forbes is a talented, up-and-coming writer who was unfairly expelled from Brigham Young University (BYU) for being gay.
Yes, you read that correctly...
If you are unfamiliar with BYU and its Honor Code system, just know this: BYU is a private university that has a history of persecuting members of the LGBTQ+ community and bans students from engaging in whatever they determine to be “homosexual behavior.” BYU expels LGBTQ+ students for even being accused of homosexuality, and encourages other students to out their peers and colleagues.
Tanner is a gay man who was outed at BYU by a peer who reported him to the Honor Code office. Consequently, he was denied a college education for being himself.
- THE SITUATION -
Tanner’s experience at BYU took him through dark times. He was suicidal, traumatized by what had happened. But with the help of friends, family and therapy, he overcame those obstacles, moved to New York City, and recently got accepted into his dream university: NYU. NYU is a prestigious school in New York City and is extremely difficult to get into.
Tanner had $13,000 in FAFSA loans when his education was cut short, which means he cannot receive more financial aid until those loans are repaid. He has tried appealing to FAFSA to reduce or remove the burden, but there is nothing they can do.
If Tanner does not pay off those loans, he cannot attend NYU and he will not be able to finish his degree.
