Help teacher Gary Mabe pay medical expenses

The art of managing a classroom requires several different roles. When Gary: The Explorer becomes Mabe: The Teacher he does so with an approach few can replicate.
Within the walls of Osceola Fundamental High School, the surname Mabe denotes merriment and reverence. For the last 21-years, the school has provided both a forum and audience, to Mr. Mabe’s extraordinary talents, plus or minus costumes and the occasional prop. Indeed, students delight in the dynamic atmosphere Mabe creates. Travels and adventures weaved into a scholarly fabric ignite the mind bringing life to an otherwise standard curriculum. Mabe’s spirit sparks many to pursue their own sense of wanderlust. If a student longs to explore Europe, Gary tells them where to go, what to see, and how to do it on the cheap. Unsurprisingly, past pupils frequently sign up for additional classes to get a little “More of Mabe.” Perhaps the purest example of Mabe’s impact is best summarized by one of his long-time students, “He cares.” Through his guidance, the world is wondrous and accessible.
In late October, Gary started experiencing bouts of confusion and memory loss. Subsequently, these symptoms were diagnosed as a malignant brain tumor. Doctors were able to remove the tumor, and he is currently undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, as well as treatments to help regain his cognitive abilities. Ever the passionate teacher, his first concern was for his students.
Whether or not Gary will be able to teach again remains uncertain, and right now, our dear friend and colleague needs your help. On top of the physical toll is the tremendous financial burden that is proving to be another obstacle in his recovery.
Please join Gary’s good friend Dan Dunivan, as well as the entire staff and student body of OFHS, in showing our appreciation to this remarkable educator. Any and all money received in this Go Fund Me account will be used for the current, pending, and future expenses so he may continue to recovery with peace of mind.
Gary Mabe is a teacher who not only holds pace with students but also keeps it fresh after two-decades in. Let’s all help support one of our own.
