In March of 2021, Teacher (Jackie) Griffin rushed to the emergency room. Her daughter’s school called to share that she had suffered a seizure. Her daughter continued to have seizures throughout the week. Many tests were run, but they couldn’t figure out what was causing the seizures. Jackie and family were adamant with the medical team that something was seriously wrong and had requested for more testing. The persistence of the family resulted in an accurate diagnosis. Additional lab tests led to the diagnosis of Anti NMDA Encephalitis, which is a rare autoimmune disease that can attack the brain, likely caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Teacher Griffin (Jackie) brings love, laughter and joy. She is a founding teacher of the Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School (FACTS). As a founding member, she has anchored the school community. During the pandemic, Teacher Griffin delivered care packages to students. She visited a grieving mother throughout the summer to make sure she was okay. A line that she would often say is, “We need to respect and preserve the dignity of students.” She leads with empathy and brings comfort to the staff, families and students.
Her daughter is a fixture at FACTS. She volunteers her time and visits the school. She has always been mature beyond her age and we would often talk about her incredible and undeniable “old soul”. Always kind, respectful and helpful. Many of the staff have known her since she was five. Seeing her head off to college with a scholarship made us all proud. She will have to put her dreams on pause, but we know with time she will accomplish them.
The journey to recovery will be long. Treatment includes rehabilitation and therapy. Jackie will stay by her daughter’s side during the treatment and recovery process. This will mean taking days off from work and a build up of medical bills and expenses.
FACTS Admin. Team knows Jackie will not ask for support, but we know it is required at this time. After speaking to and encouraging her, she has given us her blessings to create a Go Fund Me collection. Please consider supporting to help reduce the financial burden and her worries.
