Hello, my name is Lesley Johnson and I am a teacher in the RCSD. In my current role, I am out of the classroom in a position that helps train and works with other teachers in the classroom. I recently found out that The Wiz will be coming to Rochester, NY in Feb 2025 and have reached out to the director of education at the theater to inquire about bringing a class. They have a program in which they provide curriculum for the show and the students will get discounted tickets. I signed one of the 6th grade classes up and now need to raise some or all of the money for the students' and teacher's tickets. The student tickets are $50 each and the teacher's tickets will be $59 each (planning on 2 teachers going).
My school, John Williams School No. 5, is in the heart of downtown Rochester, NY. It is a K-6 building with around 600 students. 44% African American/Black, 26% Latino, 15% White, 12% Asian/Pacific Islander. 93% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Bringing a class to see The Wiz will be such an awesome experience for the students. It will most likely be the first theater performance in their lives. Through the curriculum from the theater, the students will become familiar with all the elements of the theater and the specifics of the play they will be seeing. It will be a once in a lifetime experience for the students. Please help me bring this small group of 6th graders to see The Wiz!
