Help the Barrientes Family

HI, I’M HEIDI’S DAUGHTER, ALICIA, THE OLDEST OF HER 5 CHILDREN.

When faced with adversity, my mother is one of the most optimistic people I know. She's been a single mother for more than two decades, has made many sacrifices for us children over the years, she continues in her life journey as a single mother to my three younger siblings. She has a huge heart, is creative, and enthusiastic about the things she loves doing. She is an award-winning optioned screenwriter and has a passion for working on films in several capacities in the production process.

MY MOTHER AND THREE YOUNGER BROTHERS HAVE BEEN IN A DEVASTATING CRISIS AND NEED HELP NOW.

When the pandemic struck the entire world was affected, the most damaging effect on my mom and brothers was being confined to their home from the lockdowns, which turned out to be a highly toxic environment. Their apartment had an extreme case of mold, levels were so high it was declared uninhabitable, very little of their possessions were salvageable.

To put things into perspective, consider the possibility of losing any book, t-shirt, nostalgic snapshot, and piece of furniture you possess. My mother and brothers have endured this. However, unlike a flood or a fire, mold-related damages are not covered by renter's insurance.

When they had to leave their home and after a few weeks of hotel stays, my family was able to find a temporary place to stay. The pandemic made it incredibly difficult to find a more long-term location; it was much too costly for their budget. My mom looked for support through local agencies, but organizations and shelters she contacted were packed either because of the pandemic or because of a lack of funds due to the influx of people in need caused by the pandemic months prior to my family having to leave their home.

For a year now my family has needed a more suitable and permeant location to live at.

ADDING TO THE SITUATION

My mother's ability to communicate with others in person, particularly in public, has been greatly impacted by the social changes made because of the pandemic since she is partly deaf. Masks make it difficult to read lips and read facial expressions, plexiglass walls and barriers block out the sound of someone speaking as well as background noise, and social distancing has made it difficult to get close enough to hear over it all. One can only imagine how difficult it is for her to handle this on top of everything else.

In addition to my family being displaced from a home, months of pandemic lockdowns, losing their possessions, my mother also experienced domestic abuse, resulting in an injury that requires surgery.

MY FAMILY NEEDS HELP SO THEY CAN START TO HEAL AND REBUILD AFTER THIS DEVASTATING CRISIS.

My family has been undergoing a grueling marathon of full-time survival mode on a scale that few can comprehend. My mother and brothers would benefit from community support, which would provide them with the stability they need to recover and restore their lives.

Getting out of the moldy atmosphere and discarding mold-infested items is just the start of the process. To ensure a complete recovery as possible, the body must also be detoxified. Every system in the body is affected by this progressive, potentially fatal disease.

For the past year, my mom has been trying to figure out how to get my brothers and herself the specialized health care that has been too far out of reach. She found a clinic that specializes in Toxic Mold Illness (also known as Biotoxin Illness, Mold Illness or CIRS) after weeks of searching nearly a year ago now and has been unable to figure out how to afford the medical expenses, travel to and from across the country or to relocate.

MY FAMILY NEEDS FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM OUR COMMUNITY

My family would have to face yet another significant obstacle in order to receive this treatment. The clinic is on the East Coast in a high cost of living area, and care is not provided by health insurance, leaving Heidi with a substantial financial burden in addition to her existing physical limitations, which prohibit her from working at this time.

My mother had no idea how difficult or costly this would be. Mold Illness and Mold Avoidance are both financially crippling, which insurance providers and service agencies provide no assistance. The strain of the situation is beginning to show more and more as time goes on.

WITHOUT FINANCIAL HELP, MY FAMILY’S JOURNEY IS AT A STANDSTILL

My family is powerful and tenacious. I'm encouraged by how optimistic my mother has stayed in the face of such adversity. My mom is, however, tired and in search of a place to relax and recover.

Heidi has a long, expensive, out-of-pocket medical escapade to tend to and will keep spinning her wheels until she has the funds to make the trips back and forth across the country or re-locate to get this process moving forward and retain stability while they all get medical care.

MY FAMILY LACKS THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO REPLACE EVERYTHING.

My family is unable to bear the costs of returning to normalcy. High medical expenses due to this not being a well-known disease, medical insurance not covering treatment, travel to and from or relocating for the treatment, as well as having to reconstruct their whole lives from the home they lost and everything that had to be thrown away, are the three main high costs they are facing.

HOPE IS ON THE HORIZON!

For my family, relocation and long-term stay on the East Coast near the medical clinic would be a game-changer! It will provide them with the stability they need to get treatment and recover, rebuild their lives, and allow my mother to complete all her surgeries, physical therapy and return to work without the burden of constantly driving across the country for the next 12 – 14 months. The issue with this is they would be on their own far away from any help family could assist in providing.

This Go Fund Me page has been created for the Barrientes Family in an effort to help provide a home, medical treatment, and day-to-day expenses as they recover. We (her family) are all contributing to the best of our ability, but it’s insufficient for their needs. The following is a list of immediate requirements:

URGENT NEEDS

Home – A place where Heidi and her boys can call home during their recovery and after until Heidi can return to work. The cost of this is currently unknown and will vary on location.

Mold Testing – To prevent any additional exposure while receiving treatment. Mold inspection/air quality/dust sampling check done in each potential new home before final decision made. The average cost per home is $1,500 - $5,000 price depends on the areas going rate and level of testing.

Mold Medical Treatment – Medical insurance does not cover mold illness. Testing, treatment, supplements, medication for Heidi and her three boys. Duration expected to be a minimum of 12-14 months of treatment without any serious medical complications that need attention from the mold exposure. An estimated minimum of $40,000

For my mom’s service dog, veterinarian expenses – estimated $1,500 for urine mycotoxin testing only. The full amount of veterinarian expenses is TBD once testing is done, and a full diagnosis and treatment plan is determined.

Caregiver – Will be needed for a couple of days, weeks to a few months after some surgeries for Heidi. This is for things her boys will not be able to help out with, especially with no family close to help out if they relocate closer to the clinic if no one is available or able to get time off work. The cost for this is currently unknown.

Cost of Living Expenses – Food, utilities, and miscellaneous needs.

Transportation – To and from medical appointments; gas, car insurance. Other means of transportation/travel for medical care may be needed such as; Uber/Lyft, bus/train, hotel stays, car rentals, etc. This will vary depending on where the family is located near the medical clinic or across the country from it. Cost is currently unknown, will vary on the type of travel and rates at time of need.
