The Flood
In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 26, 2021, East Detroit was getting a lot of rain. Dozens of city pumps failed. Streets flooded and sewage water began backing up into the basement of Paul and Jamie Duda's home. By sunrise their basement was under several feet of sewage, destroying much of their belongings.
The damage was brutal.
The furnace was destroyed, along with the laundry washer and dryer. Two couches, end tables, and desks were waterlogged and falling apart. Countless possessions, treasured photos, projects and even some family heirlooms were gone overnight.
In the proceeding weekend, the Duda family managed to clean out the basement, tossing out the vast majority of the belongings lost to the flood, and attempting to salvage whatever they could.
The cleanup efforts are not yet behind them, and Paul and Jamie need to begin rebuilding and replacing essentials for their home and their two boys, Hank and Cary.
The Expenses
The Dudas have several expenses ahead of them.
- Professionally sanitize the basement.
- Replace the washer and dryer.
- Replace the furnace.
- Replace lost items that were stored in the basement (ie, seasonal items, baby clothes, etc)
- Loss of pay while taking time off to deal with the present emergency.
- Cover meals, laundromat services, and other essentials while dealing with the present emergency.
