On the 26 April, our lives changed forever when Rohan was involved in a quad bike accident in our home town of Weipa. Suffering extremely severe head injuries and requiring emergency surgery for brain swelling, we spent five weeks in Townsville and then transferred to Brisbane for him to start intensive rehab at PA hospital.
He is in his 3rd week of rehabilitation with the ABI transitional rehab team in Brisbane.
For the last 11 weeks, we have been living away from home. Uprooted from our family, friends and our way of life. It has also meant that our youngest has had to return to online schooling, I have not been working, and Mick's work has also been heavily impacted with the resumption of FIFO work until we return to Weipa. Caitlyn (eldest sister) has been heavily affected in her Uni studies, which means she has not worked over for weeks. It has affected the whole family greatly and in all areas.
Roh is not working and will not be able to return to work until medically cleared - this could be up to 1-2 years before he can return to full-time employment and completing his apprenticeship.
Roh will require follow-up surgery to replace the portion if his skull that was removed to relieve the intracranial pressure and also follow-up ENT and neurological appointments, which we will have to fly to either Cairns or Townsville over the next 12 months.
At the moment, Roh does require at least one of us with him at all times due to suffering from seizures, which can sometimes be a juggling act between us all.
Moving forward, life will be different for us, but we are adapting to what is required and helping Roh achieve all that he can - it is amazing where he is from 11 weeks ago, but still a long long road ahead with continuous rehab and support.
The whole experience has been an extremely stressful and emotional time and the scariest rollercoaster ride we have ever been on. However, we would not have survived without the incredible support of all our friends and family.
We continue to stay positive each day and thankful that we still have Roh with us no matter how hard to maybe x
