For those of us lucky enough to know Rob, we all have felt his incredible energy for life. His love for family, faith and invention make him who he is. Rob’s compassion for others along with his outgoing spirit and infectious laugh fills the lives of those around him.
Rob’s passion for invention and motorsports has been interwoven his entire life. He possesses the unique ability to take on any challenge and create something better than the current best every time. Over the past few years Rob’s goal was to break the Piston Powered Land Speed record with a car totally built by himself and a dedicated and talented team of volunteers. Every trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats Rob gained more attention, because of the beauty of the car, the unique design, the enthusiasm of the team, and the fact that they were the underdog. On the off season, Rob took the car to local high schools to inspire students to dream big and pursue careers in STEM fields. To Learn. To Serve. To Inspire. That is the team's motto.
On Sunday, September 15th Rob was again trying to break this record. Unfortunately, when accelerating to his goal of over 500 mph, he was involved in a very violent crash. Rob was life flighted to Salt Lake City, where he is taking on the toughest challenge of his life.
After several days in the intensive care unit he was stabilized enough to move into the Neuro ICU which is better equipped to handle Traumatic Brain Injury patients. Every day has been full of new battles and ups and downs, but his wife Sue has been by his side and staying incredibly strong for their five children, family and friends. There is no way to know the extent of Rob’s brain injury at this time, but the doctors have advised Sue to prepare for a marathon, not a sprint for his recovery.
It is time for us to be there for Rob and Sue.
Rob will be 2000 miles away from his home in Pittsburgh for an extended period of time, creating another challenge for his family. He supports his family with his own business and although he has a wonderful group of employees to keep everything running, there is no doubt his absence will be felt. Please help the family of this incredible man during this extremely difficult time.
