Hello friends.

My name is David Gibson. My sister, Sarah, and I are devastated to report that our family home in Altadena was burnt to the ground in the Eaton Fire the night of January 7th. Fire conditions were apocalyptic that night, and there was little that first responders could do.

Our dad, Brent Gibson, was able to evacuate just in time. He escaped with the clothes on his back and a single family heirloom. Our home and everything in it was lost to the fire. The entire community of Altadena is devastated, both emotionally and physically. These mountains and this magical community have been home for our family for 30 years, and we are overwhelmed by the loss.

Dad was an electrician for those 30 years and worked on many of the beautiful craftsman homes in Altadena and Pasadena that are now ashes. He has lost all of his physical possessions, among them his wardrobe, his bicycles, all of his documents, electronics, photography equipment, family heirlooms he planned to pass on to us, and a collection of tools gathered over his entire lifetime.

After insurance payouts, our family expects we will have a financial loss numbering several hundreds of thousands of dollars. But as eternal optimists, we have lots to be thankful for. We have our lives, our health, and our amazing community in Altadena and beyond.

We are enormously grateful to anyone who wishes to contribute, no matter the amount. Whatever is collected will be used for our Dad’s get back on his feet. If you can’t donate but still want to help, sharing our GoFundMe is extremely appreciated.

Yet there is humor even in tragedy. For years, Sarah and I have asked our Dad to consider selling his old work truck, which sits in the driveway. It was spared by the flames, and inside are some of his tools. Cradling those tools are wooden drawers which Sarah covered with marker drawings as a toddler.

Our hearts are broken for our community’s tremendous loss, but we will get through it together. Thank you for your support and kindness.
