As most of you know, my brother Todd, was diagnosed with a tumor in his bronchial, which the surgeon was able to remove and piece his bronchial tube back together. He then spent 5-6 days in the hospital after his surgery. Since Todd’s release from the hospital our follow up appointment at the end of June was not exactly everything we wanted to hear. Although the surgery was successful and they removed the tumor and surrounding lymph nodes the pathology report indicated the cancer had spread to nearby lymph nodes closest to the tumor. Which means it metastasized and is classified as Stage 3 cancer. The surgeon feels confident they were able to remove the tumor and lymph nodes containing the cancer but nothing is guaranteed. Scott & White has Todd on their 10 year surveillance program which is testing every 6 months for the first 5 years then every year after that. Both Todd & Tammy decided to seek a second opinion with drs at MD Anderson. Drs there have ordered several tests which includes a special PET scan that is specific for carcinoid tumors. This is not a typical type of cancer that drs see, basically this is a rare form of cancer, the only good thing is it is a slow growing cancer, therefore the expectancy of life is longer. With several trips to and from MD Anderson, not to mention that Todd is unable to return back to work at this time and having twin children about to venture into the world of college, medical bills and everyday expenses should be the least of their worries.
