A CALL FOR SOLIDARITY WITH THE INDIGENOUS WOMEN of the NASA community of Cauca, Colombia : Help Cristina Bautista Taquinás's wish come true : Help members of her collective attend this years EZLN's international gathering of women who struggle to take place in Chiapas, Mexico | December 24 -29, 2019 What is happening in Cauca? ---- MESSAGE FROM THE NASA INDIGENOUS WOMEN / CAUCA, COLOMBIA ---- We extend our greetings and our hearts in solidarity, This past October, 2019 a horrible massacre was perpetrated in the Nasa of Tacueyó Resguardo - Toribio, north of Cauca, Colombia. In this massacre we lost our sister Neehwe'sx – (ancestral authority) Cristina Bautista Taquinás and four Kiwe Thegnas – (protectors or mother earth and the community) while exercising their legitimate right to defend the autonomy of our land. Our sister Cristina was killed for standing up against impunity : Cristina was a key leader in our community and part of the women's collective that we have grown together. After that massacre, there have been at least two more deaths in Toribio. Another massacre in the neighboring municipality of Corinto and multiple threats against the Neehwe’sx, Kiwe Thegnas land defenders and community and social justice organizers. In just the last 2 weeks at least 20 more people have been killed in northern Cauca. Despite ongoing repression and the systematic murder of our Indigenous leaders who defend human rights and mother earth. We continue to resist the impunity that wants to exterminate our community. Who we are: Our women's movement and collective work was born when we recognized the high percentage of violence towards women - living in our territories. In a short time we have achieved great achievements in the three Indigenous reservations (Kwëkwë Neehwe'sx) that make up the Nasa Project Life Plan, municipality of Toribio. For the first time five women of the movement were in the structures of ancestral leadership authorities (Neehwe'sx). Now that our sister was violently assassinated, Neehwe'sx Cristina. Our struggle has not been easy, but we are firm in our belief that we must continue to organize from a place of hope. Realizing one of Cristina’s Dreams - GET TO CHIAPAS: We share our sister Cristina's dream of attending the Second Gathering of Women Who Struggle in Chiapas, Mexico with the Zapatista women - December 24 -29, 2019. This was one of Cristina's dreams prior to her murder. We were already selling meals to raise funds and resources to be able to travel and participate in this important gathering where we hoped to exchange experiences and knowledge invaluable to Indigenous women. However, 19 days after discussing this dream in Tacueyo the massacre occurred which forced us to invest any raised funds to assist the families of our murdered community members including Cristina. A call for your support: We are determined to strengthen our organization as Indigenous women. With your help we hope two women and two girls from our Nasa community can participate in honor of Cristina who we carry in our hearts. As a mandate from our second assembly of women of the Municipality of Toribio held on June 16, 2019 we agreed to create and strengthen the various processes in which women can be more visible in the role they play in the community and in the organizational political processes of the Plan of Project Life Nasa. We know we will learn so much from the Zapatista women and women of the CNI ( Indigenous Peoples Congress) as we also have a lot to share with all of the women who will attend this gathering from all over the world. This year's focus will be Violence Against Women. We are being killed, our bodies, our lives our sisters who raise their voice. Now more than ever we believe in uniting as women. - Help us do this. We do not rely on any funding whatsoever and would be, immensely grateful for your donations and support. Transparency: 100% funds will be used for transportation and trip expenses, receipts of purchased tickets will be shared with you and updates of the Encuentro will follow.
