Help the Junin Giant Frog

Can you believe that a frog can grow to the size of a soccer ball?

That frog exists only in Peru, it is the Junin giant frog, a unique amphibian worldwide. Unfortunately, since 2014, it was declared Endangered due to threats such as the illegal trade of the species due to the difficulty of having effective surveillance and control. Its conservation is important because it generates benefits for the communities and contributes to the balance of the high Andean ecosystems in the Junín National Reserve, a protected natural area of Peru.

We are Grupo RANA, a multidisciplinary team of young people that since 2017 has been working for the conservation of high Andean frogs through co-created citizen science in protected natural areas (donations will pass through the Coalition for International Conservation in the US, our partner who will take no overhead). Until now, our projects have involved and trained more than 700 students and 100 community members in monitoring and surveillance of the frog in conjunction with local organizations and institutions.

With your support, next year we are going to create the Frog Ranger Committee made up of students and local community members, backed by regional authorities and with the aim of collaborating with the community in monitoring and surveillance of frogs at the regional level to achieve the increase 40% of its effectiveness and reduce the illegal trade of this amphibian by 10% by the end of 2024, in this way we will contribute to compliance with the law against the peruvian illegal trade of wildlife. Estimated amount we need for 2024 is $50,000.

We are also going to expand our citizen science project "Las ranas y yo" together with the Junín National Reserve, schools and allied organizations, with the aim of increasing interest in protecting the nature of the high Andean ecosystems of more than 300 students and teachers of low-income state educational institutions in the Junín and Pasco regions until the end of 2024, with this, we contribute to the goals of SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) 14 of quality education and SDG 15 life of terrestrial ecosystems. Estimated amount that we need this 2024 is $12600.00.

¿Puedes creer que una rana llegue a medir hasta el tamaño de un balón de fútbol?

Esa rana existe solo en Perú, es la rana gigante de Junín, anfibio único a nivel mundial. Lamentablemente desde el 2014, fue declarado en peligro de extinción por amenazas como el tráfico ilegal de especies debido a la dificultad de contar con una efectiva vigilancia y control. Es importante su conservación porque genera beneficios a las comunidades y contribuye al equilibrio de los ecosistemas altoandinos en la Reserva Nacional de Junín, área natural protegida del Perú.

Somos el Grupo RANA, un equipo multidisciplinario de jóvenes que desde el 2017 trabaja a favor de la conservación de las ranas altoandinas a través de la ciencia ciudadana co-creada en ámbitos de áreas naturales protegidas. Hasta la fecha, nuestros proyectos han logrado involucrar y capacitar a más de 700 estudiantes y 100 comuneros en el monitoreo y vigilancia de la rana en conjunto con organizaciones e instituciones locales.

Con tu apoyo, el próximo año vamos a crear el Comité de guardafaunas de las ranas integrado por estudiantes y comuneros locales, respaldado por autoridades regionales y con el objetivo de colaborar comunitariamente en los monitoreos y vigilancia de las ranas a nivel regional para lograr el incremento del 40% de su efectividad y disminuir en 10% el tráfico de este anfibio para finales del 2024, de esta forma contribuiremos al cumplimiento de la ley contra el tráfico ilegal de fauna silvestre. Monto estimado que necesitamos para el 2024 es de $50000.

También vamos a expandir nuestro proyecto de ciencia ciudadana “Las ranas y yo” junto a la Reserva Nacional de Junín, escuelas y organizaciones aliadas, con el objetivo de incrementar el interés en proteger la naturaleza de los ecosistemas altoandinos de más de 300 estudiantes y docentes de instituciones educativas estatales de bajos recursos de las regiones de Junín y Pasco hasta finales del 2024, con ello, contribuimos a la metas de la ODS 4 de educación de calidad y la ODS 15 vida de ecosistemas terrestres. Monto estimado que necesitamos este 2024 es de $12600.00.
