Help the Kawaʻakoa Family Find a New Home

Aloha, This fundraiser is to help the Kawaʻakoa family (Mōʻī, Okaliʻi, Wailuanui, Sam, Henry and their 3 dogs Kukahi, Hina, and Moku) raise enough money to cover the overwhelming move-in costs to keep their family housed. They are at risk of being without a place to live and afford their basic needs and regular bills.

The Kawaʻakoa ʻohana has been renting a three-bedroom home in Pukalani for seven years. But their landlords, who were displaced by last year’s Lahaina fire can no longer pay $7,500 a month in rent because their insurance ran out. So, to avoid becoming homeless themselves, they are moving into the home they own in Pukalani, leaving Mōʻī and her ʻohana with nowhere to go. You may have read about them on the local news as an example of the ripple effect the housing crisis has had on Kanaka and local families being priced out of Hawaiʻi.

Mōʻī is a tireless advocate for the houseless community on Holomua Rd and a giver who rarely asks for anything in return. I started this GoFundMe to help her find housing and pay for all the move-in costs associated with that. They are currently staying with a friend, but were just notified by her landlord that they need to vacate by October 31st. Now they are searching for a 3-4 bedroom home that will accept 3 dogs. The market rate for a home like that on Maui right now is around $5000 and will require a first/last months rent plus pet deposit and moving costs. Based on these estimates, we set our goal at $10,000 but it really is more like $15k if we are being honest.

Funds raised will be used for:

Rental Deposit + Pet Deposit

First months rent

Moving Expenses

Utility Bills

Food
