Relief for the Trekking Animals of Nepal 2020

Donation protected
Since 1980, Roshi Joan Halifax has been leading a group of western and Nepali medical volunteers, called the Nomads Clinic to the Himalayas and Tibetan plateau. Each year they bring medical support to communities in very remote, high altitude regions. The only way these areas can be accessed is on foot and by horse.

The horses and mules that support this journey are not only amazing and beautiful creatures, they are a vital and integral part of our team. Approximately 100 animals each year carry all of our medical supplies, gear, food and sometimes our human team members, while traversing extreme and occasionally death-defying terrain. Many have become constant caring companions and friends to us on a long journey.

Unfortunately, we noticed that several of the animals suffered from deep pressure sores on their backs and withers which seemed to be caused by the lack of a proper saddle pad. Resources can be scarce deep in the Himalayas. We wanted to find a way to remedy that.

Upon returning home in 2017, we found an amazing nonprofit in Nepal called Rokpa (www.rokpa.org). One of the many services they provide is to assist destitute women with children in Nepal. ROKPA offers training for women to become seamstresses with the promise of a job to follow. A fair salary saves them from a life in the streets and enables their children to go to school. Rokpa helped to design and produce a beautiful and sturdy saddle pad with 1/2 inch felt for 75 animals.

The pads are produced in many bright and beautiful colors.

The women from Rokpa work the untreated wool by hand.

Below is the Rokpa team who have all been so dedicated to this project.
The pads were a huge success and gave much needed relief to so many animals. Last year thanks to so many generous donations, we were able to expand the program. 120 new saddle pads were provided, along with fleece girth covers and an extensive mobile animal treatment kit.

We were able to treat so many animals with urgent issues on the trail such as lameness, lacerations, infections, hoof abscesses, colic and many other problems.

Dr. Barbara checks belly sounds on a mule with colic.

This sweet mule got treatment for a deep laceration to the leg.

The team will be returning to Nepal again in September 2020 to serve in the Dolpo region of Nepal. We are so deeply grateful to everyone who have been so supportive and donated over the last two years. Please be a part of this effort that will significantly impact the lives of single mothers in Nepal as well as so many deserving animals. For a donation of $200 or more, you will receive a 2020 calendar featuring trekking horses and mules in the sweeping majestic Himalayan mountains created by artist and ICU nurse, lindsay brant.
