Help the unsung heroes of Autism
Please help the heroes taking care of those who can’t help themselves!
NuPath has cared for and supported my disabled son Kelly for almost 10 years, and COVID-19 has created a complex set of challenges for assisted living homes. Every year I run a special project to improve the house, living conditions, and provide something which couldn’t get done otherwise. This year we need to scale up, so I’m reaching out for your help.
We just learned today (two days before Christmas) that every resident in Kelly’s group home tested positive for COVID-19. My son Kelly and four other young men are sick today. They rely on NuPath to assist them with the day to day challenges of living with autism. Now add COVID.
The NuPath staff are selfless, caring, amazing people doing an already tough job, often for not much more than minimum wage. They support some of the most vulnerable people in our society who need them every day. They are heroes
risking their personal health to care for others.
When a group home gets sick, the staff must shift into a crisis response mode. They cover 12 hour shifts both day and night, they live out of hotel rooms to quarantine and protect their own families, and if they become sick... This all requires extra planning and resources that aren’t part of normal budgets.
The first priority for this gofundme is to cover the increased costs for care due to COVID. For example, additional personal protective equipment, special cleaning services, delivered meals, or lost wages and medical expenses of staff infected in the line of duty.
As a retired military officer, I know when a service member risks their life to save another, that act is worthy of consideration for the Congressional Medal of Honor. Our nation’s highest award. These NuPath workers are putting it all on the line for other human beings. Their personal calling to serve the disabled population is important and worthy of recognition and support.
This is going to be an incredibly tough winter for many group homes across the United States. I am committed to helping the more than 19 group homes NuPath manages. If the fund raiser is wildly successful, I’ll work with NuPath to establish an endowment for ‘Autism Heroes’ to support autism organizations, group homes, workers and families in need. Any amount you can afford to donate is deeply appreciated and goes directly to NuPath as a not-for-profit.
Please join me in making a difference and thank you in advance!
