Black Cowboys of Fletcher Street & Concrete Cowboy
Donation protected
This Go Fund Me has been created by the owner of the horse stable at 2605 W Fletcher St. This was one of the stables seen in the new Netflix movie Concrete Cowboy.
The building containing the stables used by the black urban cowboys of Fletcher St. is actually owned by our unrelated real estate company, Strawberry Mansion Properties, LLC. Back in 2014, when we heard that the stables were being sold at Tax sale due to unpaid back taxes, we wanted to do our part to help preserve this property as stables on Fletcher St., and we acquired the building. Back in 2015, Strawberry Mansion Properties LLC donated neighboring vacant land on Fletcher St. to the Fletcher St riding club.
While we have absorbed a lot of these costs ourselves, the riders who keep their horses on Fletcher st, and in particular our stable located at 2605 W Fletcher St, have been hard pressed to keep up with their obligations towards rent, water, utilities, and taxes. Our hope is that with the generous support of the Go Fund Me community, these expenses can be partly or fully funded so these added expenses are taken off the shoulders of the horse riding community on Fletcher St, allowing them to spend their hard earned money on the horses themselves and their own living expenses in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. We are hoping that the additional exposure brought to the real Fletcher St. cowboys as seen in the new movie Concrete Cowboy, can help gain the support from the public.
The riders and the horses have been using the space for their stables for decades. The building actually dates back to approximately 1915! Horseback riding has been a tradition on Fletcher St for well over 100 years. In a tough neighborhood and a community that has sometimes suffered from limited options and role models for the youth in the community, the lessons and responsibilities learned while on Fletcher St. has been an incredible asset and a blessing.
Should this fundraiser raise excess funds, these funds would be used to both cover future expenses as the balance allows for years to come, and help cover repairs as needed and as become necessary to the property. We also hope to use funds to acquire other vacant land in the area to try to reserve space for the horses and horse culture on Fletcher St for generations to come.
