Help The Uros Rebuild Their Community ( Valeria)
Hi there my name is Kelsey and my Boyfriend's name is Cesar. We decided embark on an adventure to Peru in Aug 2021 and are so thankful we get to spend a few days with Valeria. Valeria is a Uro who lives in a small village a couple hours outside of Puno on Lake Titicaca.
The tourism has been next to nothing because of Covid ( even though before that it never really picked up) and the village and the people in it have suffered greatly as the government does not offer help and has forgotten about them because they have adapted a different way of living .Lake Titicaca is a lake in between Peru and Bolivia the Uros make small islands out of Totora Reeds therefore the government does not consider them to be part of Peru.
There is tourism on the island and some Uros have adapted this way making a living where people can come stay with them and their families to learn more about the culture and history. However this is only a small amount of Uros who have been fortunate enough to be able to do this. The rest of the population are in desperate need of our help especially the children who don't have a lot of school supplies and resources.
Things that are second nature to us like food, clothes, toys are all things they have a lack of resources too. Children are the future and we have been fortunate enough to go to this small village and meet Valeria who will take us to school and to see the children where we can hand out supplies and make their day.
The Lake works on a barter system where they fish and make hand crafted items to exchange to each other. It is really cool and a huge sense of community where they really all do look after one another.
We will keep you posted and will be posting pictures and videos after so you can see what a difference your contribution made !
Stay Safe Everyone
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give
