Help The Wager Family

Jimene was brought to the emergency room by ambulance on February 13th. She was soon found to be suffering from liver failure, with the kidneys quickly following. She was urgently transported to Mount Sinai Hospital’s TICU in Manhattan from Albany for an anticipated liver transplant on February 15th.The wonderful team of doctors and nurses at Mount Sinai have regimented treatments that have shown a slow increase in her liver function, and if her labs continue to show improvement, she will hopefully no longer be considered for a transplant. However, during this, it has been discovered she has been suffering from chronic kidney disease that has been left untreated. Despite continued dialysis her kidneys are not yet improved enough to be sustainable on their own, leaving the possibility of long-term dialysis treatments moving forward. Although she is not a candidate for a liver transplant at this time, we aren’t out of the woods just yet. As of today, Jimene has been hospitalized for two weeks.

We have been informed that even without a transplant, she will be required to return to Mount Sinai for appointments as often as twice a week, depending on her state at the time of her discharge. Aside from medical costs, her husband, Don, has been staying in Manhattan to be by her side throughout all of this, but has had to file for FMLA. In order to continue to be present and act as her medical proxy, we have to rely on our community for the support needed. Costs have already started to become large from travel and housing, and will only increase from here. We do not anticipate her being in any shape to work for the foreseeable future, and expect her to be focusing on her health.

Jimene’s friends and family, including her three sons, anxiously await good news each day, and have been doing all they can manage to do so that she is not left alone during this time. We want to ensure nothing hinders her long road to recovery, and get her back home and healthy.

We have received an overwhelming amount of love and support from family and friends as well as continuing requests as to how they could better support the family through this time. In an organized effort to allow our community to offer what they can we are creating this fund for Don and Jimene. Anyone who is able and willing to consider sparing what they can, your support would be incredibly helpful and greatly appreciated as this unforeseen medical emergency is placing undue financial stress on our family. Housing, food, and follow up appointments costs are not things covered by her health insurance, and unfortunately, both Jimene and now Don are out of work until this passes. Thank you in advance to anyone who is able to contribute, no matter how small the amount.
