Cancer took his Siblings… He’s FIGHTING to SURVIVE

My name is Zelda Calvo. I’m fundraising for this amazing family with the most heartbreaking situation. We hope that you can find it in your heart to help them while their full-time job is caring for their 7-year-old boy who is fighting a rare life-threatening brain cancer. While the family is focused on his care, bills continue to come in along with added expenses because of the medical care required.

As you will read below this is not the first time cancer has visited this sweet family’s children. Please help them find financial peace, stability, and insure they still have a home to return to while they work to stop another tragedy from occurring.

Their journey...

The heartbreaking reality of a phenomenal woman. Ramona’s life started when she became a mother to her first child. She dedicated her life to being a great example and a role model for her children. She continued her education, pursuing her Bachelor of Education until her first child started complaining of an earache…. Sadly, the doctor misdiagnosed her earache as a superficial ear infection. Fatiana Hope passed away from Medullablastoma (Brain Cancer) a few months later. She was only 7yrs old.

I wish I could say Ramona’s heartache stopped here… It doesn’t.

As Ramona gathered her broken heart, she turned her attention to her second child Abraham John, “AJ.” He was only 3yrs old when he lost his big sister. He was an extremely intuitive and compassionate little guy. He loved his Mommy with all his heart. When he turned 8yrs old, he was blessed with a baby brother, John Anthony. As much as he was excited to celebrate and play with his baby brother, his poor body started to weaken. That same year AJ was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer.  AJ was a true island warrior. He fought this Medulloblastoma with every beat of his heart. He fought hard… despite the brain cancer returning three more times; he spent every waking minute teaching his little brothers everything he knew. He welcomed his youngest brother, Thomas John when he was 11yrs old. Sadly, this was about the same time Ramona and their father parted ways. Doctors had NOT made the genetic connection at this point. AJ was a wonderful big brother. Unfortunately, during his six months of remission from his brain cancer, he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer called, Adenocarcinomafering. Our Island Warrior “AJ” died about a month after his 14th birthday. His mommy took care of him from the first day of his fight.

I wish I could say Ramona’s heartache stopped here… It doesn’t.

For the second time, Ramona is left to pick up the pieces of her broken heart and start her life over again. But this time she was blessed with a fantastic partner, the love and support of her family living close by, and a baby girl in 2021. Ramona, also, found a fabulous place of employment where her bosses and co-workers love her.

Their Life seemed to be going wonderfully… UNTIL…

Early this year, Thomas John turned 7yrs old. Sadly, at this routine checkup, they found a tumor. He has been diagnosed with a history of constitutional mismatch repair deficiency syndrome. The following month he had brain surgery to extract the mass. The test returned positive for the same brain cancer that Fatiana and AJ are known to have endured. Thomas lost his brother AJ when he was three years old.

Ramona has been the sole breadwinner for her family. With two kids at home and one at the hospital… working isn’t an option for them right now.

THIS IS WHERE WE’RE ASKING FOR YOUR GENEROSITY…

Due to the specialized nature of the radiation, Thomas was referred to the Seattle Children’s Hospital, 4 hours away from their home. He is currently getting chemotherapy at the Seattle Children’s Hospital, and Proton Radiation therapy at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Proton Therapy Center. They estimate he will be there for the next 6 to 8 weeks, then back to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland to continue his chemotherapy treatments, 1hr away from their home in Salem.

We are asking for monetary support to help them get through their 3rd child’s fight against brain cancer. Your much needed donation will help keep a roof over their heads, a vehicle with gas to take Thomas to his daily treatments/therapy, appointments, living expenses, medical supplies not covered by insurance, and most importantly, peace of mind so Ramona can focus on caring for Thomas John.

Thank you so much for your time... Thank you for reading about this remarkable woman and her resilient family.
Please help this family, this incredible mother, fight Brain Cancer with her third child.
This picture was taken after his Brain Surgery… He wanted to hold our hand while he slept.

It has been a rough go for this loving family. Despite all the set backs Ramona and her family continued to help the community by participating in local clean up activities, giving back events, and countless other things that benefit others before Thomas was diagnosed. They are truly amazing.
