After hundreds slaughtered for being Tigrayan, they were forced from their hometown in Abala, Afar and imprisoned in Semera Detention Center. .
Driven to leave their homes, these Tegaru are now imprisoned in extremely harsh conditions in the Semera Detention Center. In Semera, they have no protection from adversity. Daily, their numbers decrease at an alarming rate. People lack medication, basic food, clean water, and shade from the scorching sun; they suffer deeply. Children, elderly, young parents–all ages are being lost to this tragedy and the daily death toll rises. Up until now, eighty one souls have died and the rest are at death’s door.
According to one, We want the world to be sensitive that even the loss of one family member will eternally and painfully change us; the ripples of this many losses will be felt forever. About 15,000 people are still alive and we must come to their aid as soon as possible.
Thousands of children have become lost or separated from loved ones, and have been forced to flee their homes. Health facilities have been damaged. There is a shortage of medical supplies, leaving children, pregnant women, and those who have suffered sexual violence without access to vital healthcare. Many women suffer miscarriages. Children have been out of school for months, putting them at risk of exploitation and sexual violence. Many young girls, as young as the age of twelve, have been required to change religion and forced to be married to local elderly men. We must act quickly.
We expect that by now many have heard about the Tigray genocide, but little is known about the Tegaru who have suffered in Afar for many months. Our hope is two-fold. We want the plight of Tigrayans, throughout Ethiopia to be understood. This is not a secluded event; this is an ongoing ethnic cleansing. We also want the tangible needs of people to be met. Time has shown that times of evil pass. May we forever leave hope in this dark moment for the generations to come by not only our words but our generosity in giving and helping.
We would like to thank you in advance for supporting the suffering brothers and sisters in Afar.
