Help Tiyo Walk Again After a Hit and Run Accident

Donation protected
On 05/01/20, Emergency Medicine resident Dr. Nichole Michaeli was struck by a vehicle in a hit and run accident, while walking her beloved dog Tiyo. Nichole and Tiyo suffered traumatic injuries requiring emergent medical care. Due to the trauma, their lives will not be the same for the foreseeable future.

Nichole is a smart, caring, and hard-working Emergency Medicine resident physician in Providence, RI. A true adventurer at heart, Nichole loves to travel and explore new places. She loves trying new activities, meeting and befriending locals, and tasting new foods. She’s a wonderful and supportive friend and doctor and is always ready for the next adventure. As a doctor, she is used to caring for critically ill and injured patients in the ER, but she's not used to being the person in the stretcher with her own major injuries to contend with. During her recovery, she will not only have to take care of herself, but she will also be tending to the needs of her beloved dog Tiyo.

Tiyo is Nichole’s globe-trotting faithful companion. He was just a puppy when Nichole adopted him 7 years ago while she was stationed in The Gambia working as a member of the Peace Corps. A former bush dog now acclimated to residential life and human companionship, Tiyo has become a pup of discerning taste under Nichole’s care, with a particular fondness for pepperoni, and a distaste for constraining leashed walks and the rain. While Nichole was "lucky" not to lose her life or any limbs, Tiyo was severely wounded when the hit and run driver struck them, and he needs a critical surgery to walk again.

We are hoping to raise the necessary funds to help support Nichole and Tiyo as they begin the recovery process. Any donations received will be applied directly to their large medical bills. As Nichole works hard to recover so she may return to her role as a front line healthcare provider in the emergency department, her beloved pup will be trying to recover from his upcoming surgery as well, so he may join her once again on her adventures.

While we know the COVID pandemic has been hard on everyone, taking care of our front line providers so they may continue to take care of our local community is so important right now. Please consider how impactful any donation you make will be for both Dr. Michaeli and Tiyo.

If the fundraising goal is exceeded, any surplus will be applied to a future Emergency Fund for medical bills for our resident physicians and/or their support animals.
