Help To Digitize Tangerine Dream’s Legendary Visual Archive!

Donation protected
Dear Friends and Supporters,

My name is Jerome Froese. I am excited to present an extraordinary opportunity to preserve the rich history of the iconic German electronic band, Tangerine Dream, and ensure it remains accessible for future generations. I warmly invite you to join me in my crowdfunding campaign to digitize the band's extensive analogue photo archive.

The primary goal of this campaign is the digital preservation of this invaluable archive. Your generous contributions will be used to acquire the necessary equipment for digitization and to finance the intricate processing of special photo, film, and video formats.

Digitizing analog media is a labor of love—an expensive, complex, and time-consuming process. Specialized equipment and software are required to transform films, tapes, photos, and paper documents into digital formats. High-quality scanners and film scanners, in particular, come at a significant cost.

Skilled and dedicated personnel are essential to operate the equipment and ensure the digitization is done accurately. This involves preparing the analog media, performing the digitization, and post-processing to ensure the digital copies are of the highest quality.

Moreover, the digital files must be securely stored and archived, which incurs additional costs for storage media and data backup solutions. In some cases, additional challenges may arise that require further resources and expenses.

Considering the costs for hardware, software, personnel, and storage solutions, the task of digitizing analog media is a substantial endeavor. This project involves several thousand images, hundreds of hours of film, and countless other memorabilia items.

This campaign is an ongoing initiative that depends on the interest and financial support of our amazing community. Please note that this is initially a donation campaign without consideration, as all donations will be used directly or in conjunction with the archive. For detailed information on the use of funds, please visit the project's website.

With your support, I can lay the groundwork for future projects, including books, exhibitions, performances, and merchandise that will beautifully present the work and history of Tangerine Dream.

This campaign is especially personal to me as I am the last sole remaining contemporary witness of almost all decades of Tangerine Dream. I am passionately committed to preserving the visual legacy of my parents and the band for the future.

A particularly special aspect of the Tangerine Dream photo archive is the artistic work of Monika Froese. A renowned artist in film and photography, she not only documented Tangerine Dream but also created works of art featured on various album covers and publications.

Early Years and Style Development:
Tangerine Dream began in the late 1960s as part of the German Krautrock movement, but their music quickly evolved into a unique blend of electronic sounds, often utilizing synthesizers and sequencers. Their breakthrough album "Phaedra" (1974) is regarded as a milestone in electronic music and helped bring the genre to international prominence.

Throughout their career, the band has released over 100 albums, including numerous soundtracks for films and TV series such as "Sorcerer" (1977) and "Risky Business" (1983). Tangerine Dream received seven Grammy nominations (1991 - 1995) and was celebrated for their innovative soundscapes.

What exactly will the donations be used for?

The planned investments will be contingent on the amount of donations received.

I. Acquiring equipment to enable partial in-house digitization of various formats.

II. Considering outsourcing the digitization of large portions of the archive or special formats to an external company.

III. Exploring the possibility of renting additional cloud-based solutions to further secure the archive.

IV. Evaluating opportunities to collaborate with third parties for producing physical products, such as books and merchandise.

V. Considering organizing events to present the archive, potentially in collaboration with other interested parties or institutions.

VI. Planning to travel to meet with former members to conduct joint research on the content of old photos and engage in biographical discussions.

VII. Exploring the possibility of renting or purchasing dedicated spaces for exclusively working on the archive, potentially outside of Germany.

I believe that the primary objectives, particularly Point I, can be accomplished with an initial investment of 20,000 Euros. This campaign also has the potential to generate additional funds for more ambitious projects. However, to fully realize several of my strategic goals, securing a higher level of funding in the six-figure range will be necessary.

It’s important to note that scanning a single image, such as a 9x10 slide, through a professional service can cost between 70 to 100 Euros (net). Therefore, I am setting an initial goal of 100,000 Euros. Achieving this remarkable target would be truly extraordinary!

What benefits do donors receive in return?

I believe it's essential to be open and honest with my donors. I'm immensely grateful for your support and want to inform you that this campaign is initially based on donations. All proceeds are intended to lay the groundwork for further initiatives. For now, this is the primary objective of my crowdfunding campaign.

Naturally, I'm also contemplating ways to express my gratitude to my supporters. Should my expectations be met or even exceeded, I'd love to organize a complimentary event at a to-be-determined location for everyone. This would provide a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the campaign's success with all of you.

Let’s work together to ensure the visual legacy of this legendary band is preserved for long-term accessibility and conservation for the future.

I am so excited to announce the launch of our brand new website, designed especially for this project! It's packed with all the info you need.
