Help to heat a home.

Home ownership is part of the American dream. Everyone longs to own one at some point in their lives. Buying a home for the first time can be both rewarding and challenging. The experience can be seamless or frustrating.

A family I know in particular is currently going through what one could only refer to as a "nightmare". David, Emma and their son Kalvin. Their home ownership journey came with unbelievable obstacles. I’ve never witnessed such a heart wrenching situation in my life. I admire their due diligence to take care of the horrible matter themselves. But at some point, something has to be said about the home they bought and what needs to be done. They would give anyone the coat off of their back. But now, they need our help.

What you ask? Let me explain.

David and Emma were renters. On a whim they found out they had to move because their landlord sold his home and wanted to move into his rental. Not having much time to find a home. They frantically set out to find one. The goal was to find something affordable. They took all the proper steps to become home owners. Except, the home ownership system failed this young family.

David and Emma found a realtor agent to help them. They found a home, put a offer in, had the home inspected, and had it appraised.

They settled for the house they found on short notice. It wasn’t the prettiest one. But they knew they could spruce it up best they knew how with their limited resources.

After closing, they looked forward to moving into their humble little home.

Once in the home and within a short amount of time they started noticing their son Kalvin's allergies were all of a sudden acting up so badly. The previous owners had a cat. Thinking it was possibly from the cat which stayed mostly in the front bedroom, they began to investigate. Upon investigation they came across a dampness in the bedroom closet. They then began to remove the flooring from the closet and so it all began.

There was mold. A lot of mold. The more flooring they ripped up the more mold they found. There was also another unusual find. DIRT. There was dirt 3 inches thick under that flooring. Underneath the dirt was asbestos flooring and a cracked and sinking slab.

The front bedroom was stripped of all flooring and drywall, mold remediated, asbestos removed. Few days later it rained real hard and now it was discovered the bedroom window had been installed incorrectly and there was an active leak. Plumbers were called and the entire plumbing system was inspected as it needed to be before proceeding with the concrete work. The first plumber tried to scam them out of $14,000 saying the whole system needed replaced. They paid for a second and third opinion and it was found that the first people were of course scammers. Thankfully that bullet was dodged. But the hits don't stop there!

At this point all savings is depleted and credit cards maxed out with all the chaos of the front bedroom in the amount of $5000+. So what happens next?

More mold, asbestos, and dirt was discovered in ALL of the house as well as, you guessed it, more cracked and sinking foundation! At this point the flooring in the entire house has been removed, all mold remediated, all asbestos removed, and all of the insane amout of dirt that was used to make it appear that the house was level has been removed.

Now an additional loan has been taken out in the amount of $20,000 to finish repairs and that's it. Monthly bills are now maxed out. And then.....

Once the dirt was removed the cement company came out to fill and float the slab. It was then discovered that there were huge voids underneath the slab of the ENTIRE HOUSE which is why the slab was cracked and sinking. Upon filling those voids to repair the slab, so much cement was needed that it ended up collapsing the existing duct work filling it all with cement.

Now a new furnace is required as well as a completely new air duct system that has to be installed in the attic. Also, the bottom kitchen cabinets got ruined while fixing the cement (they were already falling apart anyways) and need to be replaced.

Once all of these events started to unfold. It became overwhelming. They stretched their financial limitations beyond what they could handle in order to keep up with all of the cover up damage hidden by the previous owners. For some reason, nothing was disclosed. Everything slipped by the realtor, inspector, and appraiser.

The level of hidden damage that was uncovered was nothing short of disgusting.

We are currently seeking out quotes for the remaining work that needs to be done. Reaching out to any resource we come across. The goal is set at $10,000 but will be updated or adjusted when a final number is determined. Until then...... they are living on concrete and heating their home with space heaters. In fear of frozen pipes or electrical fires....

I know David and Emma would be grateful for the help.
