First, thank you so much for taking the time to read Tom’s story. If you know our brother, you know Tom was well-known for his speed around the bases (and in the outfield) and his hitting power during the many years he played baseball (little league, Legion, high school, Rend Lake College) and men’s slow-pitch softball (PJ’s Lounge, Hi-Top Bowl, BJ Logging, Lenjo’s, Lonzo’s, Max Q). Through the years he faced many opponents, but now Tom is facing his most challenging opponent – cancer (stage 3 colon cancer).
It was in March when Tom first discovered there was a chance he had cancer given some blood work and other tests run. His red blood cell counts were off, as his body was losing blood, to the point where he almost needed a blood transfusion. On April 8 Tom had a colonoscopy which discovered a mass (about the size of a golf ball) which tested positive for cancer. A couple of weeks later (April 22) Tom had surgery to remove the mass from his colon. The hope was the cancer was contained to the mass, and that after surgery, Tom would be cancer free. Unfortunately, some lymph nodes removed during surgery also tested positive for cancer. So now Tom is getting ready to start the daunting process of 12 rounds of chemotherapy (one session every other week).
In the past you may have competed with or against Tom, but during this time we need to all be on the same team, “Team CRUSH Cancer.” This fund has been created to help Tom ease the financial burden that, more often than not, is tied to medical expenses not covered by insurance. We realize this is a strange time we find ourselves in at the moment given the COVID-19 pandemic, and understand not everyone is in a position to provide financial support. If you are unable to donate, we ask that you please share Tom’s story with others, as well as keep him in your thoughts and prayers. If you or one of your loved ones has experienced cancer, you know it’s not an easy road. We appreciate your support in any way possible as our brother battles his most challenging opponent.
Thank you from Tom’s CRUSH Cancer Team,
Rick, Dave, Vicki, Jim, Nancy and Sherri
