Help Montera Toro Teachers on Strike in OUSD
Donation protected
Oakland teachers are currently on strike, joining the national movement for a stronger and more equitable public education in this country. Teachers are standing up for public education and fighting for the public schools that Oakland students deserve. Teacher retention, smaller class size, and more support for students are just a few of things teachers are fighting for.
Montera Middle School is a leader of this fight. With an extremely large, diverse and involved student population, dedicated and organized teaching staff (with an incredible picket captain and 3 amazing picket team leads), and immeasurable family support, many sites have been looking to Montera for strength, leadership and support.
With the strike on Day 5, and no end in sight, many teachers are worried about the financial impact of their action. OEA is offering grants for some Oakland teachers, but there is not enough for all teachers. Provident is offering no interest loans, but this is still money that needs to be repaid after the strike ends.
Many friends, family, and community supporters have asked how they can help.
You can help ease the stress of this immense financial hardship by donating to give teachers from Montera Middle School gift cards for groceries, gas and other household necessities. Giftcards to Target, Trader Joes, Whole Foods and Chevron will be purchased and distributed to teachers who have been on the line, rain or shine, in support of the quality public education Oakland students deserve.
Montera Toro Teachers are truly humbled and energized by all of support thus far and will continue to stand up every day of this strike for Oakland students. Please consider donating to help ease the burden of buying groceries and other household items while they're out on the lines.
