Help Track COVID-19 in Kenya

Donation protected
BackpackEMR is preparing for a pilot rollout to track COVID-19 cases in Kenya. We'll need additional equipment and training to start our pre-testing deployment!!

You can make a major impact in the fight against the Coronavirus in underserved communities!!

What are we doing?
BackpackEMR has been pre-approved to provide a national data collection tool for Kenya that will allow all COVID-19 cases and results to be tracked in one system, and reported back to government officials. This data helps to make critical decisions like where to send more COVID test kits, personal protective equipment (PPE), and ventilators, along with tracking the hardest hit areas to send additional support.

We are partnering with Belgium startup Andaman7 , who will provide a free app for patients to take daily surveys while in self-quarantine.

SAMPLE REPORT (NOT valid #'s):

We have also partnered with Nairobi-based Medical Records Institute (MRI) to distribute devices and train staff within quarantine and isolation locations. For this pre-testing, we will start with a handful first, and roll out to the others (currently 26 isolation centers).

Why is this so important in Kenya?
While we struggle to keep up with the COVID response in hospitals here in the US, the same is happening in countries like Kenya. Issues are amplified by a lack of resources, facilities, and healthcare workers. Additionally many vulnerable populations living in informal settlements (slum areas) do not have the luxury of social distancing and sheltering in place. We need to help them stop the spread NOW!

Who are we?
Our company, Binary Bridge , is a public benefit corporation out of Minnesota. We created BackpackEMR in 2016 to help the 1/2 of world's population who lack access to healthcare. HALF! Thousands of foreign and local medical teams pack up medical supplies and personnel, and travel to rural villages to provide pop-up clinics. Our system is light-weight (fits in your backpack!), and can share data with many devices while OFFLINE across many clinic stations. No server, no internet, no electricity. Pretty cool stuff.

So why BackpackEMR for COVID tracking?
At Binary Bridge, we have always been focused on underserved communities in low-middle income countries. And, our simplified patient data tracking tool makes us uniquely positioned to mobilize quickly, train in 1 hour, and start capturing data IMMEDIATELY!

And, surprisingly, since COVID is so much like the common cold, our primary care data model fits the data collection needs perfectly.

Our team has been working around the clock - no kidding - since the virus hit to tweak our processes and build reporting to fit the COVID model, and we're ready to GO! Now we just need your help to get the equipment to the front-line health workers and mobilize our trainers and data clerks to make this happen!

How can you help?
We need to fund the equipment we currently have in-country (20 iPads), along with sending 15 more! Additionally, our Nairobi team member, Mary Murugami, will be traveling to several initial locations to train the healthcare workers and distribute the iPads for tracking - and we want to fund her amazing efforts! And lastly, we will need extra management and oversight, and the Medical Records Institute has data clerks who can help.

Here is the situation in Mary's words:

20 in-country iPads:

$400/iPad + $100/Rugged Keyboard x 20 = $10,000 Total

15 iPads to Send:

$450/iPad + $100/Rugged Keyboard x 15 = $8,250 Total
(we couldn't find less-expensive ones on short notice!)

Shipping:

Shipment for 50lb box to Kenya + VAT = $1,500 Total
(might be more/less? - we'll find out on Wednesday!)

Training and Ongoing Management for 35 Locations

$3,500 Training + $6,000 Management = $11,000 Total

We are all in a unique position to help fight this virus - please help us to stop the spread in Kenya and better serve those affected by COVID-19!
