Tristan Hart.
Tristan is 22 years old, and lives in Stillwater Oklahoma with the love of his life, Erin, and their neurotic rescue German Shepherd, Max. They have had a rocky start in life.
Born in Tulsa after a very hot summer, Tristan has been a determined individual, making his own way his whole life. He excelled in school, graduating with honors as valedictorian of his senior class. He excelled in multiple areas. He has never been afraid to try new things. He was drum major, and played multiple instruments in high school. He was a successful cheerleader, basketball player, and graduated from 2 programs at Central Tech: Pre-Engineering and Automotive Mechanics. He has always done his best, in any endeavor. He earned a national robotics medal his senior year in Skills USA, and was named “Mr. YHS” the same year. He was also in beta club all 4 years of school. A natural leader, He was known for helping classmates and always being willing to lend a hand. He had a knack for helping other classmates understand the tough topics. He has a quick wit, fast humor, and a contagious laugh.
In the years since school, His passions have all converged in working on his car. He has upgraded, and improved 4 vehicles since he got his first old 1996 Camaro at 15 years old. With each car, he managed to use sweat equity to upgrade the year and type he bought. Most recently, he has set his sights on learning to drift his 2011 Camaro. To that end, he had begun to make the changes to his car before he fell ill. He loves driving, and working on improving the vehicle he owns.
Outside of Highschool, Tristan volunteered at his church, playing bass guitar every week from his seventh-grade year, until just 2 months ago. He has participated in other community events, volunteering for the swimming pool clean up a few years back, and helps his Papa Hart with projects on a regular basis. He has volunteered time to build tech into various places around town, and lent his good musical ear and technological expertise to the Freedom Celebration in Oilton, helping with the sound broadcasting each year. He is generous with his time, expertise, and even monies when he has extra.
Tristan and Erin started dating only months after they graduated in 2017. They have been inseparable since. They made a tradition of having Sunday dinner with Tristan’s extended family, and Thursday dinners with Erin’s dad, Randall. Tristan enjoys new dishes and learning to make a wide variety of foods from Randall. Tristan loves Erin’s extended family, and finds joy in their holidays together. Erin fits in with the Harts like she has always been there. They bought their first home in August 2020 and settled in to build a beautiful life together.
In spring of 2019, Tristan and Erin were in a terrible car wreck when a truck hauling a heavy load ran a stop sign. They were transported in the same ambulance, where Tristan, although badly hurt, held Erin’s hand the whole way to the hospital. During the ordeal, his only thought was for her safety. While waiting to have a CT Scan, he kept asking after Erin, and her well-being. Miraculously, both of them were not critically injured, but do have some lingering affects even to now.
Tristan is the guy who would go sit with the lonely kid at recess. When in Kindergarten, Tristan was having trouble with a kid picking on him. Until one day, after school, he told his mom, “You remember that kid I told you was really mean? I decided to just be super nice to him, and guess what? He just needed a friend, Mommy! Now, he’s not mean, and we played on the big slide all of recess!!”
Tristan has served his community as a cheerleader, band leader, praise leader, team leader, and spiritual leader. Now, he has come to a place where leadership takes a back seat. He has cancer: Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. It came on suddenly, and for a few weeks, doctors thought he might have Covid 19, or some hidden infection. Soon after diagnosis, Tristan’s condition went down hill FAST. He told his family: “This is not like any sickness I’ve ever had. I feel like I’m actively DYING: This is NEXT LEVEL sick…”
Since becoming ill, Tristan can not work. He is the majority earner at his home, as Erin is still experiencing limitations from the car accident 3 years ago. His employer is supportive, and holding his position for him, but as a small company, they can not pay him while he is off indefinitely.
While Tristan has health insurance, even very basic cancer treatment is expensive. A close friend shared with the Harts that their recent (successful) treatment of a similar cancer had a total of 2.1 million dollars in billing. They were well-insured, so their portion was not that high, but even with insurance, a $2.1 million medical bill would financially devastate Tristan and Erin for the rest of their lives. His mom, a mathematician has put a pencil to it, and estimates that Tristan will need approximately $50,000.00 to pay most of the medical expenses that he anticipates at this moment, and keep his mortgage and utilities paid. This is a conservative estimate. If, as often is the case, he will require treatments that we haven’t anticipated, that number will rise quickly.
We, their family, are doing our best to help, and we know that Tristan and Erin both have been beloved in Yale for years. We know that if others know their plight, then they, like Tristan, would be happy to help in their own way.
