Two Stranded Migrant Families Living Under Bridge in Mexico

Urgent!

These families pictured here sold everything they had and risked their lives on a deadly 4 month trek to the United States for the possibility of a better life for their children. They left their home because there was no other option. The shelves were empty, the hospitals had no supplies and their government provided no help for the widespread hunger and suffering of its people. They didn’t want a hand out; they just wanted an opportunity to work and support their family. They made it half-way and are now stranded living under this bridge in Central Mexico.

Their sign in Spanish said: “El sueño no se cumplió. Ya solo quiero regresar. / The dream was not fulfilled. I just want to go home.”

I saw it and it broke my heart. As an American and long-time resident of Mexico, I hope we can help them get to safety. They have been living under this bridge for months. In a time of so much division, maybe we can show compassion to these two families in trouble.

I am not going to weigh in on how the US-Mexico border should be. It’s a tricky situation to say the least. But, before there was some lingering hope of kindness on the other side and now that hope is gone. The current administration and its border czars have implemented widespread shut downs of asylum programs for refugees and have fomented hate against people who are just seeking survival. The US Government is pressuring Mexican immigration officials to keep migrant families out of the country. Mexico, which has historically been very welcoming of refugees, also lives very much in the shadow of its Northern neighbor and most important trade partner. Humanitarian visa applications have gone unanswered for the past three months. These migrants can’t work and they can’t stay in Mexico legally either.

We are raising funds for two families of young migrants between the ages of 2 and 24 who find themselves in the thick of this political mess. They started their long journey to escape situations of extreme poverty, hunger, sexual abuse, lack of basic necessities in their home country of Venezuela. Now that door has closed and their only aim is to get to safety in a country that will allow them to live there legally.

Due to their age and location in a Mexican city with a high crime rate, they are currently at high risk of kidnapping and forced sex work. Our goal is to get them off the streets. Since arriving in Mexico, these young people pictured have already experienced kidnapping, extortion, theft of all their money and passports and multiple assaults. Migrants as a whole are at risk of being “disappeared” into forced labor due to being a foreign country with no resources and no family to look for them.

They’ve already risked their lives to cross the Darien jungle, drinking water from rivers with the bodies of people that didn’t make it and traveling aboard the notorious ‘La Bestia’ cargo train, tying their children to the top of the train with rope to prevent them from falling off. They've already been pursued and extorted at every turn. All for a chance at survival and the possibility of a better life, which they now realize was a phantom dream.

Our goal is get them safely to Colombia where they can get legal refugee status for 10 years. They cannot fly because their documents were stolen and their embassy is completely unresponsive. They are allowed to travel by bus, but going over land such a long distance is unfortunately not cheap. The situation is urgent because the authorities could come any day to remove them from the bridge. If we don’t get the bus tickets, they’ll have to try to board ‘La Bestia’ train again without any money, and face a journey of at least eight months of walking, begging for change and living with babies on the unsafe streets of Mexico and Central America.

With the help of the Amigos del Tren organization in Irapuato, which has been the only organization to offer them help since their departure and which has already served over 250,000 migrants over the past 13 years, 100% of this money raised will go toward the travel expenses of these four adults and two children so they can reach their destination.

They’ll have to start over, again, but we can at least help them arrive alive and without further suffering.

Estas familias que aparecen aquí vendieron todo lo que tenían y arriesgaron sus vidas en un viaje peligroso de 4 meses a los Estados Unidos en busca de la posibilidad de una vida mejor para sus hijos. Abandonaron su hogar porque no había otra opción. Las tiendas estaban vacías, los hospitales no tenían suministros y su gobierno no brindaba ayuda para el hambre y el sufrimiento generalizados de su gente. No querían ayuda; solo querían una oportunidad de trabajar y mantener a su familia. Lograron llegar a la mitad del camino y ahora están varados viviendo bajo este puente en el centro de México.

Lo vi y me rompió el corazón. Como estadounidense y residente de México desde hace mucho tiempo, espero que podamos ayudarlos a llegar a un lugar seguro. Llevan meses viviendo bajo este puente. En tiempos de tanta división, tal vez podamos mostrar compasión a estas dos familias en peligro.

No voy a opinar sobre cómo debería ser la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. Es una situación, como mínimo, complicada. Pero antes había una leve esperanza de amabilidad al otro lado, y ahora esa esperanza se ha desvanecido. El gobierno actual y sus zares fronterizos han implementado cierres generalizados de los programas de asilo para refugiados y han fomentado el odio contra quienes solo buscan sobrevivir. El gobierno estadounidense presiona a los funcionarios de inmigración mexicanos para que mantengan a las familias migrantes fuera del país. México, que históricamente ha sido muy acogedor con los refugiados, también vive a la sombra de su vecino del norte y su principal socio comercial. Las solicitudes de visa humanitaria no han sido respondidas durante los últimos tres meses. Estos migrantes no pueden trabajar ni permanecer legalmente en México.

Estamos recaudando fondos para dos familias de jóvenes migrantes de entre 2 y 24 años que se encuentran en medio de este caos político. Comenzaron su largo viaje para escapar de situaciones de pobreza extrema, hambre, abuso sexual y falta de necesidades básicas en su país de origen, Venezuela. Ahora esa puerta se ha cerrado y su único objetivo es llegar a un país seguro que les permita vivir legalmente.

Debido a su edad y a su ubicación en una ciudad mexicana con una alta tasa de criminalidad, actualmente corren un alto riesgo de secuestro y trata de blancas. Nuestro objetivo es sacarlos de las calles. Desde su llegada a México, estos jóvenes en la foto ya han sufrido secuestro, extorsión, robo de todo su dinero y pasaportes, y múltiples agresiones. Los migrantes en general corren el riesgo de ser desaparecidos y obligados a realizar trabajos forzados debido a su situación en un país extranjero sin recursos ni familia que los busque.

Ya arriesgaron sus vidas para cruzar la selva del Darién, bebiendo agua de ríos con cadáveres de los no lo lograron y viajando arriba del famoso tren de carga "La Bestia", atando a sus hijos a la parte superior del tren con cuerdas para evitar que se cayeran. Ya han sido perseguidos y extorsionados constantemente. Todo por una oportunidad de sobrevivir y la posibilidad de una vida mejor, que ahora se dan cuenta de que era un sueño ilusorio.

Nuestro objetivo es llevarlos sanos y salvos a Colombia, donde podrán obtener el estatus legal de refugiados durante 10 años. No pueden volar porque les robaron sus documentos y su embajada no responde en absoluto. Pueden viajar en autobús, pero recorrer una distancia tan larga por tierra, lamentablemente, no es barato. La situación es urgente porque las autoridades podrían venir cualquier día a sacarlos del puente. Si no conseguimos los boletos de autobús, tendrán que intentar subir de nuevo al tren "La Bestia" sin dinero, y enfrentarse a un viaje de al menos ocho meses caminando, pidiendo limosna y conviviendo con bebés en las calles inseguras de México y Centroamérica.

Con la ayuda de la organización Amigos del Tren en Irapuato, la única que les ha ofrecido ayuda desde su partida y que ya ha atendido a más de 250,000 migrantes en los últimos 13 años, el 100% de este dinero recaudado se destinará a cubrir los gastos de viaje de estos tres adultos y dos niñas para que puedan llegar a su destino.

Tendrán que empezar de cero, pero al menos podemos ayudarlos a llegar con vida y sin más sufrimiento.
