FUNDRAISING FOR UKRANIANE FAMILIES COMPLETED

Donation protected
We are volunteers from the Russian Society of the Maritimes, Maria Fedotova and Natalia Chudaeva, helping to organize this fundraising to support four Ukrainian families who are coming to Halifax, Nova Scotia from different Ukrainian cities: Cherkasy, Irpin, Kharkiv.

Perhaps some of you may be sceptical about this fundraiser as Canada has been providing generous benefits to the refugees in the past. Unfortunately, this is absolutely not the case this time. As of today, the Government of Canada has not made any public announcements about specific support measures or benefits for the Ukrainian refugees. The majority of these refugees are coming to Canada through the authorization for the emergency travel program and some may qualify for an open work permit. This, however, does not mean that each and every refugee can start work as soon as they arrive in Canada. Many of them are elderly, some have health-related issues or disabilities, and many others are single parents with small children which limits their ability to find meaningful employment in Canada. We are hopeful that this fundraiser will help us address the immediate financial needs of the four refugee families coming to Nova Scotia until there is a more sustainable solution available to them in Canada.

This fundraiser is important to us because many of us have family members, friends, or distant relatives in Ukraine and we would like to provide targeted support to Ukrainian war refugees and welcome them to Nova Scotia as most other fundraisers are for the non-targeted assistance programs not designed to address immediate needs of individual families.

The Russian Society of Maritimes (RSM) has been contacted by several refugee families arriving in Halifax from Ukraine at the end of March/beginning of April. These families need immediate help to establish their life in Canada and this fundraising will provide direct support for arriving Ukrainian families in the first year of their life in Nova Scotia.

As of today, 4 families have contacted the Russian Society of the Maritimes. These families are with children of different ages from 1.5 to 9 years old and have been forced to leave their homes due to the war. Here is a brief description of each family:

Family #1. Mother and Father with 2 children (girl 1.5 years old and boy 9 years old (diabetes type 1).
Family #2. Young Woman.
Family #3. Mother and 2 Children (boy 1.5 years old & boy 8 years old).
Family #4. Grandmother and Grandfather, Grandaunt, Mother with 2 children (girl 1.5 years old and boy 8 years old).

All funds raised during this campaign will be used to provide food, cover accommodation costs, and cover other living necessities/expenses (clothes, household items etc.) for arriving families. We anticipate that these families will need significant funds to start new lives in Nova Scotia as the cost of living has been steadily going up here in the last several years. Here is how we plan to use the funds raised through GoFundMe:

Family #1 will stay with a host family. This family will need financial support for daily living expenses such as groceries, clothes for all family members, and children's items.

Family #2 & Family #3 are in urgent need of a rental apartment. These families require financial support for daily living expenses such as accommodations, groceries, clothes for all family members, and children’s items.

Family # 4 will stay with a host family, who has recently moved to Halifax and has only one family member who is working full time - a mom with children. Her husband recently had a stroke and is only able to work a couple of hours a day. The host's father, who is coming from Ukraine, has recently had a stroke and is recovering, thus has limited walking abilities and requires special care. This family will need: financial support for 4 adults (including 3 seniors) and 2 children for daily living expenses such as groceries, clothes for all family members, children’s items, funds to cover medical expenses and apartment rent.

We are also accepting non-monetary donations from Nova Scotians such as furniture, clothing, hygiene products etc. and we’ve had really positive feedback from the community and many Nova Scotians have expressed a desire to help. However, without monetary donations, we cannot assist these families with accommodation, food, and various other expenses.
