Help Uninsured Immigrants Access Healthcare

Donation protected
Since May, Quetzales de Salud  has served a vulnerable population of over 200 uninsured immigrants in New Jersey. Many of them are restaurant and labor industry workers who are currently laid-off and experiencing severe food and housing insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Without access to health insurance or the means to pay for medications and treatments, many struggle to receive the necessary medical care.

The members we serve are hardworking, resilient and selfless, often sacrificing their wellbeing and health, to keep food on the table and feed their loved ones. Our commitment to them stems from our belief that healthcare is a human right and that barriers to care, especially financial barriers, should not exist. Feeding one’s family or following up on diabetes care is not a choice anyone should be forced to make.

Our team of more than 70 student volunteers, health professionals, and local community leaders from all across the United States have made over 2,000 one-on-one calls to individuals to connect them to medical care. We’ve encountered members who can’t afford chronic medications, from antidepressants, to thyroid hormone supplementation, for whom a $4-$8 monthly contribution can make a lasting difference on accessing these medications. Others, who’ve been denied life-saving procedures due to inability to pay, and have incurred severe infections and lengthy hospitalizations as a result. Our advocacy and financial assistance helped provide them with care that was long overdue. And yet others, who are battling eviction and food insecurity, for whom $300 a month could provide some room to breathe.

By becoming a Quetzales de Salud Supporter, you will enable us to provide medication assistance, pay for clinic appointments, and provide food and basic necessities for individuals in dire need of this financial support. 100% of your contribution goes directly to serving families in need.

Examples of what donated amounts can provide for a family or individual in need:

–$15 provides a small selection of food and fresh produce to meet critical food shortages

–$30 covers a 1-month supply of prescription medications

–$70 helps connect a family of 6 people with groceries to last the week

–$80 covers the cost of connecting an individual to primary medical care

–$200 covers the cost of medically necessary specialty care

–$1000 covers the cost of emergency surgery for an individual (eg. stent removal)

How we connect families with resources:

1. Our student volunteers will work directly with the family or individual to assess needs and to connect them with all available resources in their local community.
2. When and if these resources are not accessible, food and medication deliveries will be made via online delivery services.
3. In cases of housing insecurity or hospital billing, direct cash transfers to subsidize or cover the complete cost of care will be made on a case-by-case basis.
