Oakland's Music Community Needs a Permanent Home

Post Genre is a volunteer based organization born out of Oakland's DIY music scene that has had a simple goal for the last year: to create an independent music venue in Oakland. We are made up of musicians, artists, sound/lighting engineers, event organizers, photographers, videographers, editors, writers, and we accept anyone who is passionate and wants to learn! Over the last year, we have had festivals and short term concert series to prove the music community's enthusiasm for this project. Now it is time to take the next step and officially start a permanent venue. This is the missing piece that will allow artists and music lovers to come together to create a sustainable home for our creative community.

Right now, Oakland lacks an official establishment to celebrate the arts. Our love for the live music community started in basements and parking lots, and while we think these settings are an important part of our ecosystem we do not think it is the only part of it.

As musicians ourselves, many of our Oakland sets have ended before they've even started due to concerts being shut down by authorities. One major solution a permanent venue offers is that it gives concerts a controlled environment to exist in that will not disturb the neighborhood. Other controlled factors include professional grade audio and lighting. This guarantees a comfortable listening experience for both the audience to hear all of the band members- and for the band members to be able to hear themselves. Other improvements of the concert experience include being able to see the band on an elevated stage and climate control of the building to prevent it becoming too hot. A permanent venue would also be ADA accessible.
