Help us find safe harbor
Daniel and Melinda had to flee the flames of the CZU Lightning Complex fire. They made it out safe, but the car has gone about as far as it can. We still don't know if there's a home for them to go back too, but in the mean time they are trying to leave the area with their Fur Babies. The thing is, the car broke down. Please help us get them to a safe space. Any donations will be used for transportation - car repairs or purchase of a running vehicle - and other costs associated with being evacuated and suddenly homeless.
In Melinda's own words:
"Late Tuesday night, August 18, 2020, we urgently loaded our old Honda Civic with bug-out bags and our animals and fled our home in Boulder Creek, deep in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We held a protective shield up as we drove to keep us safe from the flames. Our little town is on Hwy 9 which is a two lane , one way in one way out road. We had fires on all sides preventing any "back road get away". We made it out of the San Lorenzo Valley safely but could find no shelter. All hotel rooms were already taken within a 25 mile radius and our car just cannot make it that far. Typically we leave it parked and ride the public metro buses. We have been saving it for "an emergency".... knowing we would likely get one last emergency run out of her. Thankfully, that's exactly what we got. We finally found a motel room late Wednesday afternoon in Scott's Valley. The car held out until then... until our ignition locked up.
We spent a great portion of our emergency money fixing that so we would not be trapped further. That was a lucky call because early Thursday morning we were again evacuated from Scott's Valley. We were very lucky to have been offered sanctuary in a garage in a good friends house in Watsonville,CA. Again, not a very far distance but much farther than we ever take the "emergency car," knowing we may not make it back. Since we know we will never be able to go back, we just set off and asked for the universe to carry us too safe harbor. For us, that's Oregon where Family and Friends can and will help.
We reached Watsonville and parked the car. We are safe now; garage, air mattress, animals safe- we are very grateful for that. However, we really cannot go any further until our "emergency car" gets some love. At this point we need at least a new battery, a tune up, oil change and some tires, or we need a lead on a newer or
more reliable vehicle. We are looking at being houseless again for some time and would really love to find a vehicle that we can actually sleep in as necessary.
My husband is permanently disabled and I was working full time from home due to the pandemic until Tuesday. My computer, of course, is gone (I did not have a lap top) so getting back to work any time soon is questionable. Knowing that the infrastructure of our little valley will not be rebuilt for months, if not years or ever.... means we really have to look at leaving the state to find affordable housing and try to start over. We cannot do that until we get the old girl running steady again and have traveling funds. If you can help in any way we would be eternally grateful and commit to pay it forward when we are again able.
This is by far one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.... ask for help like this.
I am not used to being on the asking side.
It is incredibly humbling and hard.
Thank you in advance for any help or share you offer.
Sending Light and Love to you all knowing we are all struggling at this time."
