Project RISHI at UCLA is a student led non-profit organization that works on sustainable development projects in Vadamanappakkam, Tamil Nadu. Vadamanappakkam is a village in South India, approximately two hours away from Chennai.
UCLA’s sustainable development projects are divided into four sectors: clinic and pharmacy, environmental sustainability, education, and women’s empowerment. Our projects are focused on long term, sustainable solutions. We work directly with the village leaders and communicate with them directly in order to most accurately provide resources to the village.
This year’s projects:
Clinic and Pharmacy: Our clinic and pharmacy committee focuses on public health projects for Vadamanappakkam. They have been working on facilitating another medical camp for the village to help ascertain which diseases and medical problems are most present among the population. They also have worked on smaller projects involving a nutrition program for the schoolchildren, and creating informational guides for the women’s clinic. Another ongoing initiative is to find more volunteer doctors to come to the clinic and provide medical care to the people in the village.
The clinic and pharmacy committee is asking for $800 to help fund their projects this year.
Environmental Sustainability: Our environment committee’s focal point is on environmental health within the village. During India Trip 2018, Project RISHI tested the drinking water through a company in Chennai and found that the water the villagers drink is riddled with contaminants. This year, they have been focused on building a reverse osmosis installation in the village to combat this issue. The committee has also been involved with projects to get more soap to the primary schools and create a workshop to combat open defecation in the village.
The environmental sustainability committee is asking for $600 to help implement their first reverse osmosis plant in the village.
Education: Our education committee partners with the primary and secondary schools in the village and works on projects related to the overall school and the curriculum. This year, the education committee will be planning a career fair and have different individuals from the surrounding areas of Vadamanappakkam, who are successful in their fields, to come and speak with the students. The committee has also been involved with creating a computer literacy curriculum in the school to provide concrete computer skills that the children can take with them when entering the job force.
The education committee is asking for $500 to create a dynamic career fair for the secondary school students.
Women’s Empowerment: Our women’s empowerment committee has been working on a microfinance project. This project focuses on partnering local microfinance institutions with women in the village who have entrepreneurial aspirations. The committee has also been involved with projects to update the medical information in the women’s clinic and a pad disposal project.
The women’s empowerment committee is asking for $200 to help fund their pad disposal and microfinance projects.
Committee's Financial Needs:
Clinic and Pharmacy: $800
Environmental Sustainability: $600
Education: $500
Women’s Empowerment: $200
