Help Us Furnish Danbury Library's Sensory Room

Tax deductible
In celebration of AUTISM AWARENESS month join me in making a difference. I'm raising money for Friends of the Danbury Library Inc, to furnish a new sensory room, that will be created within the library's children's department on the second floor, with certain objects and activities designed to stimulate children with special needs.

ABOUT THE ROOM

I am Emanuela Palmares, parent of a kind, loving, and funny autistic 9-year-old asking for your support for the creation of a sensory room at the Danbury Public Library, the first of its kind in our state. I have been an active volunteer in the Danbury community for 20 years. I started my volunteer work at the library at age 15. Once I had my son, I would enjoy taking him there as well to read and meet other moms, however when he was diagnosed autistic at age 2 (Caio was then nonverbal), he would vocalize, let go of my hands and run, and the library became a place where Caio and I could not go.

Five years ago, I started an Autism Awareness event in our community, in that work I have spoken with other parents who shared with me that they wish for a place in our library where our children could visit and feel a part. With that desire in mind, I reached out to our new library director and spoke with her about the possibility of creating a sensory room for kids who have any other sensory impairment conditions.

A sensory room is a space that provides a relaxing and/or stimulating environment for people of all ages and abilities. The space would be situated within a private room adjoining the Children’s Library and is equipped with:

-UV LED Light Bar
-Textured Wall
-Fiber Optic Wall Sconce
-Bubble Mirror
-Bean Bag - Blue
-Interactive Bubble Tube
-Wood Backed Acrylic Mirrors
-Mirrored Corner Podium
-Ball Switch
-SNAP Projector
-Liquid Wheel
-Cloud Wheel
-Vibroacoustic Resonance Bench

The Sensory Room’s facilities will support the needs of children with autism, and other sensory impairment conditions, as well as offer a calming environment for those who suffer from stress and anxiety or just need a place to relax.

Our library director was excited to serve our special needs community and committed. We are looking for your help to furnish the space with the special equipment it needs, to make our library a place where ALL children in our community can feel welcome.

Please consider donating ANY amount today, have an impact on the lives of so many kids in our community, and set an example for libraries across the state of Connecticut of inclusion and love.

Sincerely,
Emanuela
