Erin, my 29 year old sister, has been battling mast cell activation syndrome since 2012. It is an autoimmune disease where the body’s mast cells become damaged and aggressively attack certain areas in response to unknown and constantly changing factors. In her case, it happens to be her airway. Triggers can be anything from food, medicine, stress... ANYTHING. It constantly changes. She can have the same routine for days and then randomly go into anaphylactic shock.

Her attacks were spread out during the first few years but are now happening closer and closer together. It has only been 3 weeks since her last attack and she just had another last night. She has bad complications from the amount of meds they have to give her and she has had heart attacks. She has congestive heart failure from it and each time these attacks happen, her heart gets weaker and weaker. She also has bad side affects from the amount of medicine they have to give her to put her in a medically induced coma each time so they can intubated her. Emotionally and physically.
There isnt much known about MCAS but there is a specialist in New York, Dr Afrin, that has devoted his life to detailed research on it. The problem is that he doesn’t accept insurance. Just to make an appt cost $500. Then $2,000 each time she goes and there is a min of 3 visits with great potential of more. He has agreed to do consults with her drs here in NC but that will only go so far.
