Windmill of Matas

The passion for this windmill comes from the 50´s, when my mother would walk Caminho das Matas and Levada do Canha to get the flour to “grandma” Bela make the bread. As she got to the windmill, she took time talking to Dominguinhos, delighting with the movement of the gears and the art of the miller handling them.

 

When in 1973, with sails and millstones already stopped, the opportunity arose to buy it, my mother did not even hesitate, and this is how the Mill of Matas officially joins our family. After 26 years, the construction of the new road caught the mill in its trajectory, resulting in its displacement and consequent reconstruction 60 meters further up the terrain.

 

Despite the firm belief of the start of the project, constraints in the availability of materials and the high costs of qualified labor prolonged the work, finally interrupting it in 2007 without completing the long-awaited mill.

 

But the dream did not die and the desire is even greater today, so the desire has become a certainty: let’s finish the work and start grinding the mill! And that is why we have come to involve you in this project, so that soon you will also be witnessing the recovery of the essential function of this mill: grinding the grains to produce flour.

 

The dimension of this windmill goes beyond its family role and its towering position from where it greets those who pass by, extending naturally to the local community, due to its educational and ethnographic function, constituting a legacy for the present and future heritage of Porto Santo Island.

 

In this new campaign with the purpose of solving the several problems, which were also responsible for the interruption of its reconstruction, the funds would be used to purchase various materials, such as wood, in order to replace part of the already damaged and build the missing, either in the grinding mechanisms or in the propulsion system.

 

In a project like this, not counting on public investment, any help is essential and welcome. To this extent, the support obtained would enable the acquisition of an important part of the necessary material for the work to be carried out.

 

We are currently in the beginning stage of the work, proceeding with the cleaning and removal of damaged parts. We are also proceeding to acquire some essential tools for carrying out the work.

 

Thus, the funds to be raised are now a necessity, in order to guarantee the smooth running of the works and enhance their completion.

A paixão por este moinho começa na década de 50, quando a minha Mãe vinha pelo Caminho das Matas e Levada do Canha buscar a farinha para a “avó” Bela fazer o pão. Chegada ao moinho, demorava-se a conversar com o Dominguinhos, deliciando-se com o funcionamento das engrenagens e a arte do moleiro a maneja-las.

 

Quando em 1973, com as velas e as mós já paradas, surgiu a oportunidade de compra-lo, a minha Mãe nem hesitou, e é assim que o moinho das Matas entra oficialmente para a nossa família. Passados 26 anos, a construção da nova estrada encontra o moinho na sua trajetória, implicando a sua deslocação e consequente reconstrução 60 metros mais acima no terreno. Apesar de toda a convicção do arranque do projeto, constrangimentos na disponibilidade de materiais e os elevados custos de mão-de-obra qualificada prolongam a obra, interrompendo-a finalmente em 2007 sem que se conclua o tão ansiado moinho.

 

Mas o sonho não morreu e a vontade é hoje ainda maior, por isso o desejo transformou-se numa certeza: vamos terminar os trabalhos e pôr o moinho a moer! E é por isso que vimos envolver-vos neste projeto, para que em breve sejam também testemunhas da recuperação da função essencial deste moinho: moer o cereal para produzir farinha.

 

A dimensão deste moinho ultrapassa o seu papel familiar e a sua posição altaneira de onde cumprimenta quem passa, estendendo-se naturalmente à comunidade local, pela sua função educativa e etnográfica, constituindo um legado para o património presente e futuro da ilha do Porto Santo.

 

Nesta nova campanha com a finalidade de solucionar os vários problemas, que também foram responsáveis pela interrupção da sua reconstrução, os fundos destinar-se-iam à aquisição de vários materiais, tais como madeira, a fim de substituir parte da já danificada e construir o que falta, quer nos mecanismos de moagem, quer no sistema de propulsão.

 

Num projeto como este, não contando com investimento público, qualquer ajuda é essencial e bem-vinda. Nesta medida o apoio obtido possibilitaria a aquisição de uma parte importante do material necessário para que a obra se concretize.

 

Atualmente estamos na fase de início dos trabalhos, procedendo à limpeza e remoção de materiais danificados. Estamos também a proceder à aquisição de algumas ferramentas essenciais para a realização da obra.

 

Assim, os fundos a angariar são desde já uma necessidade, de forma a garantir o bom andamento dos trabalhos e potenciar a sua conclusão.
