Help Us Give Adela Vázquez a Dignified Farewell
Donation protected
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Adela Vázquez, a fierce, outspoken Cuban trans Latina activist who dedicated her life to advocating for transgender rights, HIV/AIDS awareness, and the dignity of LGBTQ+ communities. Adela was a pivotal voice in San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ circles and a champion for Trans Latino life. Her larger-than-life legacy and her powerful generous spirit cannot be easily summarized in just a few words so we invite you to watch her and listen to her directly in “Horneando Pies (Baking Pies)" a short video narrated and edited by Adela herself in 2023.
Adela was not just an organizer but a cherished friend, mentor, and trans mother. Adela was an amazing cook, known for making the best arroz con pollo. She was incredibly skilled with her hands, able to fix anything around the house. At heart, she was a raver kid, lover of house music. In the 1990s she founded Las Atredivas, a group of translatinas that performed at Esta Noche to fundraise money for HIV/AIDS. She worked at ProyectoCONTRASIDA por Vida, Trans Thrive, Instituto Familiar de la Raza and various other orgs.
Adela fought tirelessly for transgender women of color, ensuring their voices were heard and their access to healthcare and support was prioritized. In her late years she founded 50 and Fabulosas, a group of trans Latina women over 50 at the AIDS Foundation.
As we gather to honor her legacy, we are raising funds to cover the expenses of her funeral, cremation, memorial services and support for her family. Any contribution, large or small, will help us give Adela the farewell she deserves and will make sure her legacy is preserved.
