Nel distretto di Nebbi, nel nord dell'Uganda, stiamo facendo qualcosa di semplice e concreto: piantare alberi insieme alle persone che vivono lì.

Dal 2022 The Trees Project lavora fianco a fianco con le comunità della regione del West Nile. Non arriviamo con un piano deciso altrove: lavoriamo con 150 caregiver locali che curano i vivai, scelgono dove piantare e seguono ogni albero mentre cresce. Finora abbiamo distribuito 27.000 piantine di 7 specie diverse, raggiungendo 52 comunità.

Qui gli alberi sono molto più che alberi. Riportano l'ombra dove il suolo si è inaridito, danno alle famiglie frutta e legna da ardere, trattengono la terra e permettono a un territorio in difficoltà di respirare di nuovo. Questa è l'agroforestazione: alberi e agricoltura che crescono insieme, perché chi vive lì possa contare su entrambi.

Il progetto è portato avanti da Amici di Angal, un'associazione di volontariato italiana. Mandiamo avanti tutto con circa 5.000 euro l'anno. È una cifra piccola che fa moltissimo: copre le piantine, gli attrezzi, la formazione e il lavoro sul campo per un anno intero.

In the Nebbi district of northern Uganda, we're doing something simple and tangible: planting trees alongside the people who live there.

Since 2022, The Trees Project has worked side by side with communities in the West Nile region. We don't show up with a plan made elsewhere - we work with 150 local caregivers who tend the nurseries, choose where to plant, and follow each tree as it grows. So far we've handed out 27,000 seedlings across 7 species, reaching 52 communities.

Here, trees are more than trees. They bring back shade where the soil has dried out, give families fruit and firewood, hold the earth in place, and let a hard-pressed land breathe again. This is agroforestry: trees and farming growing together, so the people who live there can rely on both.

The project is run by Amici di Angal, an Italian volunteer association. We keep everything going on roughly €5,000 a year. It's a small amount that does a great deal: it covers the seedlings, the tools, the training, and the fieldwork for a full year.
