Help Us Help Keep Haitian Doctors Safe

Donation protected
Hello everyone,
Our names are Anne-Sophie Janvier and David Cassagnol. We are anesthesia residents at the New York Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) – Columbia University in New York City. We both grew up in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and left our families at the age of 18 and 17 respectively, to pursue a higher education in the United States, and ended up in the same graduating class, in the same anesthesiology program by pure luck!

We created this GoFundMe campaign to send vital medical equipment to our native Haiti.  Haiti is being significantly affected by COVID-19, and our colleagues there are in desperate need.

One of the tools that we use at NYP is called a McGrath Laryngoscope.  We use it to intubate patients so that we can deliver the oxygen that keeps our most critically ill patients alive with a ventilator.  Intubating patients is a high-risk procedure, not only for the patient, but also for the physician placing the breathing tube.  Because the McGrath is equipped with a camera, it allows the doctor to visualize placement of the breathing tube while significantly reducing infection risk by avoiding direct (at close proximity) examination of the patient’s throat.

Another vital instrument that we would like to send to Haiti is the Hepa filter: it is placed on a segment of the anesthesia machine to filter viruses and bacteria, to decrease cross-contamination of our patients and equipment.

We at NYP are lucky to work with the best equipment available.  Our patients benefit and we, as front-line physicians, are also protected.  Our colleagues on the frontline in Haiti don’t have such equipment and we want to send it to them.  So, with these funds we intend to buy 4-5 McGrath video laryngoscopes which would be sent to different hospitals across the country (1 per hospital). These hospitals rely solely on close, direct visual procedures to intubate patients. Having access to a McGrath would increase the quality of care they deliver while keeping their caregivers safe. And we would like to send our colleagues about 200 Hepa filters.

Please join us in this  urgent fight against COVID. Please help us protect our colleagues, friends, fellow human beings in Haiti. Any amount donated is welcome!

The breakdown of the funds needed is the following:
McGrath video laryngoscope: $1,000
A box of 50 disposable blades: $399
Replacement battery: $40 each
Hepa filter: $6.63 each
PLUS tax

We are estimating that each hospital will need:
1 McGrath + 2 boxes of blades + 2 batteries + estimated taxes = $2,100
For 5 blades we would need $2,100 x 5 = $10,500
200 Hepa filters approximately cost $6.63 x 200 = $1,326

So we set our total goal to be $13,000 to include shipping to Haiti. Any surplus of funds can be used for additional blades, batteries, Hepa filters or any other PPE that our colleagues are in need of. THANK YOU!
