It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of William P. Houghton, beloved husband of Helen Houghton and father of Nicholas and Wayne Danjin. William, who everyone knew as Bill, passed away in the early morning hours on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at the age of 78. Bill was a devoted family man who cared deeply for his wife, sons, and our extended family.
Bill was the foundation of our family, always ensuring our safety and comfort. He was a devoted and loving husband, dedicated to his wife and family until his final days. In addition to his professional achievements as a civil engineer, Bill served in the Colorado & Kansas Army National Guard until 1969. He worked as a division engineer with the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway from 1965-1981. He worked at ITT/FELEC Services from 1982-89 where he was a facility engineer working on the design and reconstruction of Arctic airstrips and the instillation of new radars at remote Alaskan sites for the Distance Early Warning (DEW) Line during the Cold War years. It was during this period that he met his future wife in 1987. He went on to work as a Construction Manager at Rea Construction in Hampton, VA from 1989-91. Bill moved to Utqiaġvik (Barrow) in January 1991 to be with his family and worked at Arctic Slope Consulting Group (ASCG) until February 1996. Bill went on to work on numerous major airport projects, including South Korea's Incheon International Airport in 1997, Miami International Airport in 1999, Chicago O'Hare International Airport in 2005, and the John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana in 2007. He moved back to Anchorage in 2010 where he lived, worked, and retired until his passing.
Bill enjoyed embarking on random road-trip adventures to places like Denali, Homer, Seward, or Kenai with his wife Helen and his family. Whether it was outings, drives, dinners, or even Bingo nights with his wife or his mother-in-law Mary Ahkivgak. His family bond was unbreakable when spending quality time was involved. Bill cherished his happiness and spent time with his extended family making memories unforgettable, always making known his genuine joy with laughter, humor, and zest for life yet; the agility of his admirable and humble nature spoke volumes.
As we navigate through this difficult time, we find comfort in the knowledge that Bill will find his final resting place in peace; and to achieve this goal is our utmost wish. All proceeds will go towards arranging Bill's memorial service and funeral. Your generous contributions will ensure that Bill receives a proper burial.
The funeral date will be held, Tuesday, August 13 at Legacy Heritage Chapel at Angelus at 10:30 am with a burial scheduled for 12:30 pm. Please keep Bill and our family in your thoughts and prayers. We deeply appreciate the love and support we have received during this challenging period. These past few days have been difficult, and Bill is sorely missed, and his memory will forever remain in our hearts.
His belief in God and his belief in his son Jesus our Lord and Savior, through prayer, was his daily praise, to be thankful each day in our daily lives whether it be suffering or the happiest day, through prayer he was always thankful as we know he is.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness, your support, and your prayers as we prepare our beloved William “Bill” Houghton to rest in peace.
