Help us Learn and Share Indigenous Farming Methods
Tax deductible
Our organization, Indigenous Permaculture, is working to send 4 of our students and staff to the Traditional Native American Farmers Association training in Espanola, New Mexico this July.
This 2 week immersion will enable us to strengthen our urban farming training programs through a focus on responding to the impact of climate change. Our experience of learning from the arid landscapes of the Southwest and the indigenous peoples who have been farming there for 1,000s of years with traditional ways will complement our programs, bringing more methods into our urban gardens and appropriate technology projects that we can share with the community as we respond to changing conditions.
Our students have been learning indigenous perspectives to observe, practice, and discuss our urban farm projects, and have learned about planting and harvesting crops using traditional methods, and organic and non-chemical practices. We have been studying soil life, water systems and design, climate resiliency, and plant care. We look forward to bringing more information back to the Bay Area!
Indigenous Permaculture is a grassroots organization. We share traditional farming practices and apply environmentally and culturally-appropriate technology, with the ultimate goal of community food security, and do this work in an affordable way that builds capacity within the community. We provide holistic support to design and implement community food security projects, inspired by indigenous peoples' understanding of how to live in place. We envision that diverse communities we work with will become self-sustainable by reclaiming and promoting their own traditional practices and values. Our mission is to support and empower communities to become their own protagonists in developing self-sustaining ways of living.
