What is LynnLab?
LynnLab is a proposed community biology lab that aspires to make science accessible for all ages and abilities. LynnLab will provide a welcoming learning space to create opportunities for the people of Lynn and the surrounding community. Our goals:
- Encourage young people to consider careers in life science.
- Provide adults with insight into possible career change opportunities
- Demystify the work of scientists with hands-on projects that have real-world and kid-friendly applications
- Offer a "maker space" to area scientists with affordable or free access to expensive tools that often require specialized upkeep.
- Fill the need for a place that can open after school, on weekend school breaks, and on professional days.
Why Lynn? Why Now?
Lynn now has the infrastructure and zoning practices in place to attract biotech companies bringing economic development and vibrancy to the community. To attract companies that best reflect our needs and values, we need a"workplace-ready" community. We can focus on:
- Education and training to encourage residents to seek jobs in this growing industry.
- STEM resources to enrich student learning beyond the school day.
- Create the same inspiring opportunities and access to science available in neighboring cities such as Boston and Cambridge.
Where is LynnLab Now?
LynnLab is a proposal being explored by a group of interested educators, scientists, business leaders, and government officials. We would welcome your ideas, expertise, and enthusiasm!
- LynnLab will be developed in phases, beginning with activity "pop-ups" at public events (festivals and farmers markets).
- We will create awareness about the positive impact of being "BioReady", and gauge interest.
- Our longer-term goal is to identify a space in a location that needs "activation" to create a lively and safe gathering venue
What do we need funds for now?
We are currently seeking start-up funds that will allow us to:
- Create marking materials, flyers, banners, etc.
- Establish a web and social media presence
- Purchase supplies and materials for the LynnLab pop-up
- Cover the cost of our co-working space, and other administrative costs and fees.
