Please Join Us in Honoring the Legacy of Our Beloved Father
Dear Friends, Family, and those who loved our Dad,
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of our father Russell Malone’s passing on August 23rd, 2024 while on tour in Tokyo, Japan. After battling end stage kidney failure for several years, he ultimately suffered a massive heart attack that claimed his life. Not only was he one of the most prolific guitarists in the world of jazz, touching multitudes around the world through the gift of music; he was also a loving father, a devoted son, brother, and friend, and a guiding light in our lives. His sudden departure has left us not only with deep sorrow, but also with the responsibility of giving him the proper farewell he deserves.
Even after falling ill, he refused to ever stop creating music and performing for the fans whom he adored. While going to dialysis three times a week for several years, he continued to record, perform, and teach, because music was what he loved most. Our father always put others before himself and made a point to present his best self through his music, and now it’s our turn to ensure he is laid to rest with dignity and respect.
Due to the unusual and unforeseen circumstances surrounding our dad’s passing, we are unable to handle the financial obligations of this situation on our own. We are humbly reaching out to you, our community, including his beloved fans and fellow musicians to help us cover the costs of memorializing him and the necessary arrangements to settle his affairs, including transporting his body back to the United States, the cost of cremation, handling business and legal matters in his home state of New Jersey, and finally laying him to rest in his native Georgia.
Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a significant difference, and we are infinitely appreciative of whatever you may find in your hearts to give. Your support will help us through this difficult time and allow us to focus on honoring his memory.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and generosity during this challenging time.
With gratitude and love,
Darius L. Malone and Marla V. Malone
