Ecuador - Help us move our house to a safer place

During the winter, it is common for rivers to increase their flow, in particular the Tigua River is one of them, in which two communities and several farm families currently live on its banks, not to mention our infrastructure that for more than 12 years Since its construction, it has been established as the “base” house for all our purposes and initiatives in situ.
In May 2019, a large flood was recorded, in which fortunately, there were no human losses. However, the communities “Pueblo Arrecho” and “Boca de Tigua” reported material losses along with farm animals.
Recently, on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, information was projected through the media and social networks about the torrential rain that had been recorded in the northern area of Ecuador, especially the province of Esmeraldas and Manabí, which is why the alarms went off. about the critical situation that all the communities and inhabitants who live and work in this area, belonging to the Cojimíes River basin, north of the Pedernales canton, could be facing. In fact, the intensity and duration of precipitation that day surprised with one of the largest floods or overflowing of the Tigua, Balzar and Cojimíes rivers recorded in the last 25 years, which reached levels not seen since the phenomenon of the child of the year. 1998.
As soon as we received the news through a call from a neighbor, who worriedly shared what had happened, we decided to travel the next morning to assess the damage caused by the flood. What we saw upon our arrival was devastating, roofs, beds, tanks, pigs, chickens, parts of what was once a country house were floating tangled in the palisades on the Tigua River, which was about to completely wash away our base house. ”, losing a large amount of material goods, farm animals, and what was most unfortunate, the death of our Forest guardians, our friends and beloved dogs “Doco” and “Sacha”.
We deeply regret the losses we had in our corn, cassava and banana crops, work and sacrifice of years that we had obtained with so much effort.
The Casa Tigua team is completely shocked by these events, but at the same time grateful that no member of our team or residents of the neighboring communities went through a tragedy due to this relentless force of nature.
Such an event discourages and hurts any strong spirit, but we will not abandon our mission in the reserve, in its forests, its biodiversity and its communities.
