About us: LGBT Books To Prisoners (lgbtbookstoprisoners.org)

We are a trans-affirming, racial justice-focused, prison abolitionist project sending books to incarcerated LGBTQ-identified people across the United States.

In the over 10 years that we've been operating, we have sent books to over 13,000 people. So far in 2024, we have sent 1,063 packages of 3-4 books each.

We need your help to obtain new queer books!

Our longtime supporter Lambda Literary has over 3,500 NEW books to donate to us if we can move them to Madison!

Why do we need these books?

First: We are fully volunteer-run and donation-funded. Nearly all of our book inventory comes from individual donations.

Increasingly, prisons are imposing restrictions on book condition, format, and content, like:

Brand new condition only
Paperbacks only
Restrictions against LGBTQ content (the incredible resource Trans Bodies, Trans Selves and other titles are banned in several US states)

Relying on donations of funds and books, it is increasingly difficult to keep our shelves stocked with queer books and to fulfill requests from people who can only receive brand new books.

We really can't overstate how much of an impact this donation from Lambda Literary will have on our ability to get LGBTQ+ books into the hands of people who otherwise have limited access to LGBTQ+ resources.

Funds raised during this event will support:

Travel and supplies costs for LGBT BtP volunteers to go out to Atlanta to pack up the books into boxes
Moving van costs to bring the books back to Madison
If we raise more than $3500: Anything left will support our regular operations! Our largest expenses are USPS media mail postage and rent for our storage and work space in the Social Justice Center.

Kick-off Event @ Delta Beer Lab

Join us in-person at Delta Beer Lab on Tuesday, August 20! As part of their Change It Up Tuesday event series, Delta Beer Lab will donate net taproom proceeds from 4:00 pm - close. Join us for tabling, mingling and activities followed by Drag Bingo from 7:30 - 9:00 pm!
