Hola, me llamo Zahra y tengo 10 años. Cuando tenía 6 años me diagnosticaron con epilepsia. Mi familia agotó todos las opciones médicas y recursos disponibles en Puerto Rico por lo que hace 10 meses nos mudamos a Florida en busca de respuestas y tratamiento para mi epilepsia. Debido a las continuas convulsiones y las múltiples citas médicas mi mamá tuvo que dejar de trabajar. Aquí descubrí que tengo el Síndrome Lennox-Gastaut (LGS) y Autismo Nivel 2. Aunque desconocemos la causa del LGS, lo que sí sabemos es que es una forma de epilepsia grave que comienza en la infancia entre los 3 y 5 años de edad. Se caracteriza por múltiples tipos de convulsiones y por discapacidad intelectual. La condición de LGS me ha limitado en mi vida diaria, impidiéndome en ocasiones ir a la escuela, jugar con mis amigos y asistir a actividades típicas de una niña de mi edad. Las personas con este síndrome tenemos 24 veces más posibilidades de morir prematuramente por SUDEP (muerte repentina e inesperada de una persona con epilepsia), neumonía, lesiones y desórdenes cerebrales. No hay cura para ninguna de estas condiciones. La búsqueda de tratamientos que alivien mis convulsiones diarias nos ha llevado a tener que visitar especialistas del All Children Hospital en St. Peterburg y del Texas Children Hospital. Los estudios realizados y los tratamientos recomendados han agotado los fondos económicos de mi familia. Se ha ido acumulando una gran deuda económica y los tratamientos a los que me tengo que enfrentar, como el Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), hacen la situación insostenible económicamente. Con el VNS buscamos disminuir la frecuencia de mis convulsiones que ahora mismo han llegado a alcanzar 15 convulsiones en una hora. Además, es necesario que tome terapias de habla y lenguaje así como terapia ocupacional y la adquisición de un perro de servicio, entre otros tratamientos. Es por esto que solicitamos su cooperación. No importa el tamaño de su donación la misma será recibida con gratitud y usada responsablemente para cubrir mis gastos médicos y tener una buena calidad de vida.

Hello, my name is Zahra and I am 10 years old. When I was 6 years old I was diagnosed with epilepsy. My family exhausted all medical options and resources available in Puerto Rico so 10 months ago we moved to Florida in search of answers and treatment for my epilepsy. Due to the continuous seizures and multiple medical appointments my mom had to stop working. Here I discovered that I have Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) and Level 2 Autism. Although we do not know the cause of LGS, what we do know is that it is a severe form of epilepsy that begins in childhood between the ages of 3 and 5 years old. It is characterized by multiple seizure types and intellectual disability. The condition of LGS has limited me in my daily life, sometimes preventing me from going to school, playing with my friends and attending activities typical of a child my age. People with this syndrome are 24 times more likely to die prematurely from SUDEP (sudden unexpected death of a person with epilepsy), pneumonia, injuries and brain disorders. There is no cure for any of these conditions. The search for treatments to relieve my daily seizures has led us to visit specialists at All Children's Hospital in St. Peterburg and Texas Children's Hospital. The studies performed and treatments recommended have depleted my family's financial funds. A large financial debt has been accumulated and the treatments I have to deal with, such as Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), make the situation financially unsustainable. With VNS we seek to decrease the frequency of my seizures which right now have reached 15 seizures in one hour. In addition, it is necessary for me to take speech and language therapies as well as occupational therapy and the acquisition of a service dog, among other treatments. This is why we are asking for your cooperation. Regardless of the amount of the donation, it will be received with gratitude and will be responsibly used to pay for medical costs and provide me a good quality life.
