Help Us Preserve a Piece of Advertising History

Hello everyone,

We are reaching out to you on behalf of the Richard Roberts Archive, a dedicated charity organisation committed to preserving and showcasing historical advertising. We have been offered the opportunity to purchase a rare and possibly unique advertisement in the form of a handbill dating from the 1840's and we need your help to raise the purchase price of £100. If we can achieve this then we will be able to preserve it in the archive and more importantly make it accessible to researchers and historians.

About the Ad:
The advertisement in question is a rare gem from the 1840s. Here’s why it’s so special:

Age and Rarity: This advert dates back to the 1840s, making it one of the oldest known examples of its kind. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the early days of advertising.

Pioneering Imagery: Unlike most adverts of its time, this one includes imagery. Visual advertising didn’t become common until much later in the 19th century, so this piece was truly ahead of its time.

Innovative Product: The advert promotes waterproof outdoor clothing, a novelty in that era. The technique used was ‘vulcanising’ the cloth, which made it more effective than existing waterproof solutions. Today, we would call such a coat a ‘mac’.

Historical Significance: Cordings, the company featured in the ad, dates back to the 1830s. This advert represents one of their earliest marketing efforts, adding to its historical value.

Why We Need Your Help:

We aim to raise £100 to fund an advertisement that will help us share this remarkable piece with a wider audience. Your contribution will go directly towards promoting this rare find, allowing us to highlight its historical significance and ensure its preservation for future generations.

How You Can Help:

Donate: Any amount you can give will make a difference. Every pound brings us closer to our goal.
Share: Please share our campaign with your friends, family, and social networks. Spreading the word is just as valuable as a donation.

Thank You:

We are incredibly grateful for your support. By contributing to this campaign, you are helping to preserve a unique piece of history and making it accessible to more people. Together, we can ensure that this fascinating glimpse into the past is not forgotten.

Thank you for your generosity and support.

Sincerely,
The Richard Roberts Archive
