Help us release poetic collections of taarab music
Donation protected
UPDATE: We reached our original goal of €300 on 3 October 2024. Any additional donation will go to our second release which is scheduled for early 2025. You'll automatically become a supporter of the second release but you can choose which download link you want to receive. Make sure to follow https://www.instagram.com/pwanitapes/ for updates.
"We need your support to reissue music by the wonderful Zuhura Swaleh on a digital platform. This music, recorded at Mbwana Radio Service in Mombasa, has only ever been released on cassette. We plan to reissue it so the artist receives revenue again from her work.
We would love to raise a minimum of 40,000/= which is equivalent to circa €300. This will go towards the release scheduled for the end of this year. Our plan is to release more music by another artist early in 2025.
Despite having amazing volunteers who support this reissue, certain members need compensation for their time and effort.
Of the fundraising goal, the coordinator Nassoro Mwinyi and the artist Zuhura Swaleh will receive 33% each, with the person who re-masters the music and the visual designer splitting the rest.
Any excess funds we raise will go towards the second release.
In return we'll give you a free download link for the compilation and we'll list you as supporter.
It's also possible to donate via M-Pesa: you can use Santuri East Africa's Paybill number: 4054299, account: PwaniTapes. If you send us the transaction details, we can manually add your donation to this GoFundMe page.
Asanteni/thank you,
Nassoro Mwinyi, release coordinator and archivist, and
Alina Oswald, release coordinator.

Finally, we have a small documentary about Mbwana Radio Service (MRS), the cassette archive this release is based on. With the support of the Braid Fund, a documentary was filmed in Mombasa late 2023 which features three former MRS recording artists. Additionally, Nassoro Mwinyi provides an overview of the past and the ongoing efforts to preserve and revive the collection. See the full documentary below."
