Help us rescue & care for abandoned horses in Portugal

Hello, we are Jolan, Philine, Kay and the shelter team,

On Sunday, October 6th, Jolan & Philine discovered three neglected horses on a piece of land in Olhão. The horses, a brown mare, a 4-month-old foal, and a white gelding, were found in awful conditions. The adult horses were tethered without access to food or water, while the foal was roaming freely with a cord around her neck. The horses were underfed, and the white gelding was severely underfed, with multiple wounds and a large open injury on his neck.

The foal and white gelding have already been taken to a shelter where the gelding is receiving medical treatment. Currently, we are taking care of the mare by providing hay and water—and we are now preparing the land she will move to, hopefully very soon.

We are seeking your help to cover the costs of veterinary care (hoof care, tooth care, deworming), medicine (antibiotics, anti-tetanus,...), food (hay + nutritious concentrates), and transport for these horses. We are also working on a long-term solution to provide them a safe home, where they can recover and have the life they truly deserve after such a horrible time.

Unfortunately, cases like this are far too common in the south of Portugal, where horses are often mistreated and abandoned. The process of moving them to a safe place often takes very long, or often just does not happen because there is no space for them. We, Jolan & Philine, are committed to rescuing these horses and giving them the care they need. We have access to a large piece of land (60 ha) where we can offer them a permanent home, but we need your support to build fencing, secure supplies, and cover ongoing care expenses.
