Help Us Rebuild and Restore Our Haitian Legacy

Only 8 days into the new year, and my family has lost up to 4 homes in this devastating LA fire. Years of history, love, and tradition have gone up in flames.

Our family has been hit hard. My elderly aunts—who my mom lives with and cares for—lost their homes in this fire. Over the past 24 hours, my brother and I have worked tirelessly to ensure they all have a roof over their heads, but it hasn’t been easy.

This loss is even deeper because we also lost a home that was the heart of our Haitian legacy. Purchased by my grandfather in the 1970s, it was where he sent for my grandmother and my mom to join him from Haiti. It was where my mom and her siblings grew up, and where my siblings and I learned to cook Haitian dishes, understand Creole, and remain connect to our roots.

Adding to the heartbreak, my Aunt Naomi and her children—KJ (9), Kayla (12), and Michael (20)—also called this house their home. It was their safe haven, and now they've lost everything. Breaking the news to the kids after the holidays was especially devastating, as we never imagined it would be our last holiday in that home.
